| Horrific Morning! casualties! I ususally come home from work and say hello to the fishies. Last night I came home very late and just collapsed into bed. This morning I woke up and found to my horror my most prized gourami (mommy gourami) (gourami perfection) folded in half sucked in by my newly aquired powerhead. I let out a gasp like DOC from Back to The Future! Poor Fish- whata way to go. I feel so guilty. I have since turned the thing off. I dont want it to claim anymore of my fish. I guess I am off to get t quickfilter so there is no damgerous suction from it. I really did not think that that would have happened. Now I have learned my lesson. Holy that that Hagen is strong! BTW- my other two flame gouramis that were on borrowed time passed within days of eachother. I found the second one dead this morning too stuck to the HOB filter when I found mommy gourami. I can just imagine what that poor fish went through. the powerhead literally sucked this beefy fish up and folded it up with no problems Last edited by Lucy; February 27th, 2009 at 10:03 AM.

| Sorry for your fishy loss. Might want to check your water parameters if you have fish dying off though. They could have just as easily died and were taken by the current to where the filter intakes are. |

They had not been eating for ages. The 4 1/2 inch mommy gourami was super healthy. It just got into a fight with the powerhead and lost. Why is there not a screen included with the powerhead 802? just a little cone attatchement! GRRR! My water is just fine btw. Im pretty diligent with it. |

| Dead fish discovery is always a bit of a disappointment, sorry. That is strange that they would not come with an intake screen, but then I still don't understand the use of a pump ("Powerhead") exclusively to push water around without powering a device like a filter or sterilizer. Personally I would get or make a small sponge filter for the intake so at least it does some work as well. Last edited by CWO4GUNNER; February 27th, 2009 at 10:23 AM.

| I'm with jgon_, it would be a good idea to check your water parameters if this is a new filter you could be in a mini cycle due to losing bacteria established in your old filter
I'm not familiar with a lot of the different kinds of filters but it seems in a 55g tank that healthy fish wouldn't be sucked up by the filter.
Again, I'm sorry for your loss. |

| The "filter" that got my large gourami was a hagen 802 which does about 400 gallons an hour, the impeller is literally an inch from the intake grate. The thing is a beast! It is my own stupidity for not using even the little cone attachement. The fish were healthy- The fish keeper was stupid. If any fish got to close to the intake- they would have been sucked up no problem. Simple as that. I just got on the phone with DFSS and ordered the quick filter so I do not have a repeat. On an even worse note. After I thought I had learned my lesson, I figured I would put the cone attatchement on and figured that should keep my fish from getting into trouble- Unfortunately I was wrong. One of my parrots was claimed within minutes. I just flipped out. I can't believe it a week- no casualties- one morning -2 within minutes of eachother Last edited by Freshwater Fan; February 27th, 2009 at 11:30 AM.

Is ther reason for Powerhead 802 (very old but dependable product) running? pH 802 is very strong Pump.
Attaching QUICK FILTER will prevent such tragedy and also will polished up water in no time (need to rinse/clean the pad regularly).
If you have couple of HOB filters, I dont see the need for 802 except as temporary filter after the water changes or other disturbances to tank!
PH 802 on 55 GPH can blow lots of fish around when used w/o Quick Filter. |

I am filter freak. I have learned a serious lesson- my quick filter is on route as we speak. The 802 is unpleugged- and would you believe the loaches decided to go into the intake and have a look around- sheesh- it could have been an even more catastrophic morning!!!! |

| W/ XP 3 and HOB, should be enough flow in the tank, especially for top dweller like Gourami (from stag or slow moving water).
802 is very strong PH even w/ Quick filter, IMO. It is up to you run full or part time but I dont see a need as F/T with set up like yours. |

| I was talking to the LFS about ordering a 265 and the use of a pool pump to save cost. They use a pool pump but told me you have to be careful with pool pumps because the impellers are rotary direct drive. Anything that goes in doesn't stall the 1 HP pump. |

| What's 265? Should have strainer on sucntionside of any pump to ensure no grindingof fish (yuk!) takes place and large foam on the strainer to make sure fish dont become part of the strainer. |

| 265 gal. The use of pool pumps are common at LFS because they are relatively cheap by comparison to aquarium large pumps but much more reliable. The huge down side is noise. Pool pumps use industrial motors and shaft driven pumps. Mine will be on the other side of the wall outside in a housed insulated box about 6000 GPH. Occasionally a strainer falls off one of their 30 tanks and they never find the fish and the cupped cork screw rotary impeller never stalls. | thanks guys- just got back from the gym and as soon as I walked into the room, it all came back to me. It will actually take a little time to get over it. I never thought I would get so attatched to the fish! I must be getting soft. Im not overstocked anymore. <----insert corny joke "whea Wheaaaaaaaaaa" sound here) |

| It is surprising how they can easily suck us into their little watery worlds. |
