Freshwater BeginnersA place where freshwater aquarium fish beginners can go to post their questions and hopefully get responses from those more experienced. Also check out the Freshwater Fish Beginner's Guide and Aquarium Setup Guides. Setting up a new freshwater aquarium can be a rather large project and you want to make sure you do it right the first time. If you need help with your fish tank please don't be afraid to ask questions. That's what this fish forum is all about!
I recently found many semitransparent white tiny worms in the fish tank. The biggest is about 1cm long. all of them is like 1/10th of one mm wide or less. They are actually above the waterline and a lots of them are on the inside the tank cover. Anyone knows what they are?
Thanks,
Very nice video. My worms look similar in shape and size. But they are white and not in the water. Somehow, they are on the glass above the waterline and on the tank cover. I don't even know how they got up there.

I have recently seen a few worms like that (very close to saying exactly like that) in my tank as well.
The few I've seen have been mostly attached to the rear glass and sticking out into the tank, though sometimes I'd see one floating/swimming in the current.
They've all been very skinny, appeared to be round, and about .5"-.75" (1-2cm) long.
Tank has been set up for just over a month now and has only a Flourite/sand mix, some African root, a couple rocks, several live plants, and the snails that hitched a ride.
I haven't actually had any food in the tank yet, though the cycle kicked off by some of the plants decomposing (and I think I'm just a few days away from finishing, finally).

The squiggly in the first part of this vid is what I've seen in my tank, though I haven't noticed any since I did a major water change (about 50%) 5-6 days ago.
The only personal experience I have is with planaria.. but mine never really congregated above the water line. They were all over the tank sides in the water.
I have both worms in my 10 gallons. I actually wonder if they are the same thing. Could it be that Whyphy's video is the worm out swimming about and my video is the creature resting on the glass? In my tanks they both look so similar that I can't really tell if they are any different.
Anybody know what they are/if they are harmless/if they are from overfeeding/etc?
I wonder if adding salt to your water will kill off these parasites?.. if they are Parasites .... try Aquarium salts... if the fish eats them your good! although interesting... its kinda spooky

You can't put salt in if you have scaleless fish such as Catfish including corys and plecos. Also Loaches it can hurt them. Tetras and Angelfish don't care for salt eather.
Today I saw my Arthur (my betta) gobble one up. I was tempted to scrape some more off the glass down into the water and see what he did. I can't bring myself to do it, though.

I think adding salt will ensure, whatever they are, them be really be out of water, even crawling out of tank, perhaps? lol!
the video worm is, from everything I can find on the internet, "white worm" or "nematode."
Not sure if it is the same as the white worm that hangs out on the glass at the waterline... aka enchytraeus.
This "white worm", or "enchytraeus", in the video looks like the ones I have in the tank. I found on the internet that people culture them for fish food. I just wonder how I got them the first place. They been around for a few weeks now, but all the fish are still OK, so I guess they are not harmful to fish. Don't know if they are bad for me though. Thinking about those worms on me gives me the creeps.
