prime detoxifies ammonia and nitrites but still keeps it available in non toxic form for your cycle process.. and it removes chlorine and chlorimydes as well as other heavy metals.....

stress coat + does what prime does as well as heal slime coat, and prevents the loss of essential electrolytes and protect damaged tissue

amquel Instant water detoxifier. Performs over 6 vital functions. Removes Ammonia, Chloramines, toxic Pheromones, and Chlorine. http://www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store....-3039#longdesc

norvaqua+ detoxifies tap water, removing all chlorine and heavy metals and balancing alkalinity. Breaks down chloramines and helps stabilize water pH. Adds bacteria and virus inhibitors, electrolytes, vitamins, and slime coat. http://www.petco.com/product/13672/K...nditioner.aspx

aah ok i think i got it now. prime keeps ammonia in while amquel removes it. Right? Cause i havent put any chemicals in my tank except biozyme because its cycling right now. I was just wondering if i missed something with the amquel and novaqua cause everyone seems to talk about prime and stress coat+

if you are in the process of cycling, you want the ammonia IN ...if you have fish in the tank while cycling, you want the ammonia IN but you want it in non toxic form so the fish can survive, and at the same time its available for the bacteria to finish the cycle process...either way, you want the ammonia in there, just depends on what way if you have fish or not

I spoke to Kordon (makers of Amquel) whether it removed or detoxified those compounds.. and I was told they detoxified them; and was informed that the product did not interfere with what plants nor nitrifying bacteria needed.

I believe so, with some minor differences I'm sure.

Kordon has a very detailed, long, drawn out description of how their products work at their website. The Kordon dude that answered my email did not go into specifics, just told me that however the byproducts were detoxified, they were not changed enough in form to prevent bacteria and/or plants from using them.

Here is a link to their product description: http://www.kordon.com/kordon/amquel+/index.htm

i use prime personally, i have stress coat on hand in case of injuries and things like that, but with the prime you only need to add two drops per gallon as opposed to the much higher dosage of stress coat +. that was definitely the deal breaker for me

Indeed, I think Prime works out to be cheaper in the long run.
