How to deal with a fish who's really a pig?

Hi. I'm starting to suspect that our platy Shadow is not in fact pregnant, but the biggest glutton in fishdom. What do I do?

Since purchasing her 2 months ago we've wondered a few times if she was pregnant due to a bulging belly. It's hard to know what's "normal" or not when you have zero experience with fish so we've never been sure. She's in a 10 gallon with another full grown platy (Ember), one platy a couple months old (Spark), and we just added 2 cories last week.

I now think that instead of being pregnant she might be gorging herself when the opportunity arises. Alarming bulging belly #1 appeared suddenly after Ember went from fairly plump to much skinnier - at the time I wondered if Ember had babies and Shadow devoured them, but we just didn't know as we saw nothing. Now, in the past week since we added the cories and their food, she's had two bulging bellies, but it seems to go down in between somewhat. Today I saw her gobbling all the flakes she could find at the top, then diving to the bottom to get the pellets I put in for the cories. Again - bulging belly.

Can they really overeat to the extent that they look like they're going to explode? We're putting a few flakes per fish twice a day, and a small pinch of pellets for the cories, so it's not like we're putting a ton of food in there. But if one fish gobbles the majority of it up, I guess she could look like that? How on earth do I ensure the other fish, and the cories in particular, get their food? I tried putting flakes on one side, pellets on the other but she just zipped all over grabbing it all - it's only a 10 gallon after all so not very big.

What should I do?

yes they can overeat....very normal for guppies....also, you can feed the cories at night when the lites are out...shrimp pellets work well and sink fast...

Thanks Shawnie - I'll give that a try and hope Shadow doesn't notice!

your welcome!!
you can always put shadown in a breeder box at feeding time so you can control what he eats...just remember a fishies belly is as big as one eye so dont over feed...
