| The dog is no longer thirsty. Yay! My tank is set up! I'm setting up a divided 10 gallon tank for a betta and a dwarf puffer. I can't wait until it's ready for fishies! When I was putting water in the tank, my foster dog took a drink out of the bucket. Think it'll make it cycle faster? lol. |

| He's such a silly boy. He's a foster from a shelter I volunteer at. We're struggling to go against our hearts and not adopt him. |

When I was a surgical tech at one of the local vets, a stray cat came in and was a huge fluffy grey mass of love. Well that love turned in to a demon after a week of being in my house. One night during the dead of winter, he popped open a screened window and threw his body against the screen until it came loose. I never saw that grey bearded demon cat again! I never saw that grey bearded demon cat again! | My husband and I have rescued 3 cats and a dog from shelters. We've never regretted it. The only reason we are trying our best not to adopt Toby, is that we have:
1 dog (Guinness)
3 cats (Marlowe, Carson, & Adeline)
1 leopard gecko (Jake)
1 55 gallon aquarium (they're listed in my signature)
1 divided 10 gallon aquarium (cycling, will have 1 betta, 1 dwarf puffer)
We know in our heads that we do not need another animal. But Toby has only been here a week and he fits in so well. We're getting attached. We've got to fight our hearts.
Edit: Oh, and Toby was picked up as a stray when he was 3 months old. He's been at the shelter ever since. He's 10 months old now. Last edited by aquatic mouse; February 23rd, 2009 at 01:39 PM.

Shawnie & agabr123, Toby is my first foster. I had bonded with him so much at the shelter for the past six months. I tried to foster him 2 times before. He has some fear aggression problems, so they told me both times no, because I don't have any experience with dogs with aggression problems. Finally I told them, "the perfect foster is not coming" & "how am I supposed to get experience if you won't give me a chance". They finally agreed. Since day one, he's fit so perfect in our family. He has become best buds with Guinness (the dog) and he's learning how to act around cats. He's very affectionate and incredibly smart. I haven't seen any aggression at all. I think it was just all that time in the shelter. Last edited by aquatic mouse; February 23rd, 2009 at 04:19 PM.

| All three of my cats were adopted. Two were neighborhood strays and one was adopted from the local pound. In addition, one of the strays was pregnant, and we adopted all of her kittens out, and we took in another pregnant stray and sent her to an adoption agency. We had been working on finding a home for yet another stray (there's a family in the neighborhood who is providing our block with an endless string of stray cats because they "just figure [their] cats won't breed") before an unfortunate incident in my driveway killed it.
You definitely need to check a new animal out before adopting it; you don't want a kid-hating demon-cat tearing around the house if you have kids, but that shouldn't stop you from adopting. Good adoption places will let you test to make sure that the animal will jive with your home situation. |

This time last year (and for the last decade) I had two cats rescued from the local shelter. Then I got a fish tank. Then thanks to the wonderful enablers here I got two more fish tanks. Just recently a coworker wanted to give away her new kitten, as she needed far more attention than first thought. She had already looked for weeks before she asked me, and if I didn't take her it would have been off to the shelter - I couldn't handle that. I definitely didn't need another cat, but I don't regret the decision one bit - she's a little wonderful little fluff ball! |

| Here's a pic of him from a few months ago. I made a board for an event to advertise the long term residents the shelter has, and this was a picture I took of him to get sympathy for the shelter. |

| He is adorable! I'm so glad he's doing so well with you! Hopefully you can adopt him and your experience with him will lead you to foster more needy dogs that need good homes. I think adopted "mutts" often have the best personalities and are the most loving! My two cats were the result of an unwanted domestic litter and a feral litter. My favorite riding horses are track rescues, and one was abandoned by his owner at the barn. |
