how soon is too soon? breeding trap

now i dont know when my guppies are going to give birth as we bought them pregnant

i understand that it may stress the guppy, but i feel shes getting close, i have the 2 in one breeding trap so i can take the divider out so there will be plenty of space for my little guppy

but how soon is too soon to put her in there, beacuse i know, knowing my luck she'll have them when im at college and the other fish will eat them!

any ideas?

[ps shame on the breeding trap box for telling me i could keep 2 bettas in each compartment!!]

When she has a gravid spot, monitor her closely. I've heard that most mothers don't like breeding traps, but that was for mollies. Gravid spots are black dots behind the females big belly that are the babies heads, I think. The gravid spot signal means that in 24-48 hours, you will have babies.

No, it doesn't. A lot of livebearers always have gravid spots, especially when pregnant. A gravid spot is not a good indicator of when a fish will give birth. It is difficult to determine exactly when a fish will give birth, the best indicators are a large swollen belly, that has squared off at the bottom, and decreased lack of movement, or lack of interest in food. If you are unsure, or think that the fish may be close then put her in the trap and moniter her, this won't harm her.

Go ahead and put her in. If she doesn't drop them in a couple of days, take her out and try again a few days later.
