Newbie needs help...

Hi guys, Hope you can help. My temp is keep going to the high end of 26.c when I now have my heater at 22.c. It was at 24.c but I turned it down when the tank would not go below 26.c
Its all brand new equipment, no faults. Just added 5x zabra danios.
pH 8.0
all other levels fine.
The light source is a flurecent tube, not sure of the wattage but it came with the tank so im assuming its the correct wattage.
Our living room, where the tank is, is always quite warm and the temp did drop to below 24.c over nigt with lights off both in tank and living room.
Just cant understand why its not staying at the temp I set the heater too?

Also, its still quites clody 48 hours after putting the fish in after becoming so 24 hours before putting the fish in, maybe related
Thanks guys

Hi mate. It sounds like you heater could be faulty. Do you know what your general room temp is?

The white cloudy water is probably bacterial bloom.

How have you cycled the tank? Do you know about the nitrogen cycle?

Also what are your water reading for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

The heater is brand new, it is never on, I have seen the light come on once or twice, so would no if it was on all the time, so it cant be that reason. Our normal room temp is 24.c, we have a son of 1 year old, so keep a close check on living room temp. The cycle is done, I researched lots before starting this hobby.
PH 7.5-8.0
Amonia 0.0
Nitrites less thsn 0.3
thanks

What type of heater is it its not a Resun 50w is it?

i only ask because I picked up one of them cheap for one of my 10gals and no matter what I set the dial to the temp was always high up there between 78-80 degs I ended up replacing it with a better type and just hang on to it in case the one in the big tank ever breaks, it may (just) be stable in there lol

By the way you can work out the size of your aquarium here http://www.fishlore.com/ConversionCalculator.htm at the bottom of the page.

The size given is in US gals but everybody here will understand that.

Ok. Sounds like your high room temp is keeping the water temp higher. Not much you can do really apart from lower the room temp and see if the tank temp drops aswell.

I never get the same reading on my tank that my heaters are set to. Always 1-2 degrees out.

I would say if the temp stayed between 25-26 then you dont have a lot to worry about.

The bloom may have come from adding 5 danio's straight away. It is the bacteria multiplying to take care of the ammonia and then nitrites. This is probably why you are showing nitrites (should be 0).

I would probably do a 30% water change with some water conditioner. Do you use a water conditioner?

The cloudyness happend 24 hours prior to adding the danios so cant be that.
And I do use a water conditioner, not sure of the name off top of my head tho.
Thaks mate

Did the cloudiness start after a water change? If so it will be a bacterial bloom, but so long as your water params are ok it is not something to worry about, because you have nitrItes in your tank it is probably the bacteria that convert NitrItes to NitrAtes in which case it is just proof positive that the cycle is getting to the end stage.

Just keep doing the partial water changes to keep on top of things till you have

Ammonia 0
NitrIte 0
Nitrate <20
