Mystery/Apple snail and gouramis?

Well the fun just never seems to end. With the introduction of my two honey gouramis yesterday it’s apparent today that honey gouramis and mystery/apple snails don’t make for good tank mates. Despite his very large size there’s little doubt in my mind that the gouramis intend to make a snack of my snail.

It’s been more then difficult for me to research as I’ve found absolutely no fish profile pages that offer suggestion as to what type of fish live well with different types of snails. And likewise, despite many sites about mystery snail I’ve not come across any that suggest what fish pray on them.

Yet another disappointing experience in the hobby of fish keeping due to the lack of available information on this hobby.

Ok that's weird. I have kept apples with gouramis and never got bullied...

Maybe if you re-arrange their habitat, take the gouramis out and then bring them back in, they will take the snails as part of their territory?

that seems very strange.....the only time i've had issues with snails and fish is with one of my female bettas and that's just because she seems to be the "hunter" of the group, i've never seen vertical bars like hers!

Thanks for the suggestion Allesa,

This however is a completely new habitat for the gouramis. The snail has been living happily in my tank for the past two months with a clown pleco. About a month ago a school of neons were added and still all was happy.

The gouramis have spent the past month in my barren q-tank with two neons. The neons and gouramis were just added to my tank yesterday.

It was immediately obvious that the gouramis were interested in the snail. But aside from bumping his shell that was the extent of it. Tonight they found his weaknesses and have caused him considerable damage.

I’ve moved Houdini (the snail) to my q-tank but this is only a temporary solution as it is not my intention to keep the q-tank running other then when needed. Not sure what to do at this point.

Dozey; Can you try to keep Mr. Snail in a seperate tank? Or take out the gouramis and re-introduce them back again? I think that might help as above poster mentioned lol Maybe they need to pick their playing field lol and then all will be well. Sorry you coulnd't find info that alone is a little maddening. bella

Well after a great deal of searching I did find one other fish keeper that has experience this same problem.

Quote:
I have two of these and find they are generally peaceful though can be a bit nippy of other fish. Very beautiful colouring (I have also seen this type called Blue Sunset gourami or just a Sunset gourami). My main problem is the more dominant of the two males picks mercilessly on my apple snail and goes for his feelers. Because of this, I will have to move one to a different tank as it is seriously stressing the snail.

This particular thread suggests that gouramis don’t make as great of a community fish as most fish profiles suggest they are. So bottom line for me, despite having kept them for the past month and treating them successfully for internal parasites I will be finding a new home for them.

Houdini has been a good friend far longer then these two gouramis. So today the gouramis are going back to the q-tank and Houdini will be taking his place back in his home where he belongs.
