Goldfish in 10 gallon tank

I really bad want to know if I can keep a single goldfish in my 10 gallon tank with an adequate heater and a total of 45g of filtration. Is this adequate for the goldfish. thanks

the general rule is 20 for the first goldfish and 10 for each additional goldie. goldfish can (and will under proper conditions) get very long and IMO a 10 gallon will unfortunately stunt their growth. you've obviously taken the waste into account, but they really need a bigger tank in order to grow to their proper size.

hmm, i suppose it would depend on when you plan on upgrading the tank. if you're going to upgrade within the next six months or so, then it's probably okay if you have really great filtration. if it's going to be longer than that i'd say wait until you can get a 20 or larger.

i'll look and see if there are any goldies that would be okay in a 10 gallon by themselves...

yeah, i've been wanting shubunkin goldfish for a while but i just don't have the room for a tank as large as they need (i really want a 180 gallon for them ).

however, there are a LOT of other fish that you can put in a 10 gallon aside from goldies.

1. one betta
2. two bettas divided
3. two dwarf puffers
4. one dwarf puffer and three ottos
5. one betta and one dwarf puffer divided
6. three male guppies and three corycats
7. two (possibly 3 but not sure on that) african dwarf frogs
8. shelldwellers (i dont know much about these)
9. honey gourami OR sparkling gourami, and five of the smaller variety of tetras (neon, cardinal, glowlight, etc)

Have you ever looked at a freshwater nano tank? Animals like Sparkling gouramis (I know they're already mentioned, but just to clarify them as good for FW Nanos), Endler's livebearers, Pygmy/Dwarf corys, Ember tetras, Guppys, Glowlight danios, Nerite snails and Shrimps? It's like a mini community - Guppys and Honey gouramis are like the centrepiece fish, Glowlight danios and ember tetras are like the schooling fish, Endlers and Sparkling gouramis are like the 'little loners' and the small corys, shrimp and snails are like the clean up crew type fish.

29 gallon or larger for any of the goldies - even the fancies. You could probably have a couple of the fancies in the 29 gallon, but nothing else. You wouldn't really need the heater as goldies like a varied water temp from day to night. Also, you can never have too much filtration. It is better to have multiple outlets from the filter so you don't have too much of a current if you have the fancies since they can't swim as well.
