| Dare Devil Shrimp Okay... Here's the setup. My 29gal tank has an over-the-side filter. It's designed for 30-60 gallons, so it has a fair amount of water output. I fill the tank so the water just comes above the bottom of the "spouts", which makes for a "wave" effect of the water coming out as opposed to it just crashing down.
Alright, in the tank, among other critters, are 6 amano shrimp. One of them, I'd been noticing, seems to think he's a fish. He'll do laps around the tank, and will even chase and be chased by some of my danios from time to time. Okay I think, I have an over-active shrimp - so be it. He's entertaining, even if he's confused.
A few days later, I'm watching said shrimp do his routine, when he happens to latch on to the bottom of one of the outputs on the filter. I don't think too much of it, until he starts to climb up into the oncoming water! At first he can't get a purchase, and simply slides back out into the tank. He's a persistent little bugger though, and keeps grabbing onto the spout and trying to climb up in. He gives it about a dozen goes, never quite making it into the filter (much to my relief), then finally gives up.
Tonight, I happened to catch him trying his luck again. Amazingly, after a try or two, he manages to climb all the way up into the filter... Well, I'm not quite sure what to do. I pop the top to see if I can find him, but I don't see him anywhere - granted it's all black, so I can't really see much. Alright, so, I wait a few minutes, hoping to see him shoot out of the water outputs... No such luck. Right when I'm about to start digging through the bio-fiber and carbon filters, though, I see Captain Shenanigans climb out over the indentation where the intake chute goes into the filter. He stares at me for a few seconds, wondering what my problem is, then hops back into the tank!
So... Any advice? I'm pretty sure he's been at it for awhile now, and tonight's just the first time I've caught him. All the other shrimp are quite content to remain within the confines of the aquarium... I guess he's not really at risk - once he's in there, he can climb around easy enough, and he obviously knows the way back out. The solution for keeping him out would be to lower the water level beneath the filter output spouts, but that creates a rather powerful downward current on that side of the tank which is the reason I started keeping the level higher to begin with. |
