Holy - My Swordtails Had a Baby!

...at least I think it was the swordtails! I thought it was a piece of poo floating around the tank, until I saw the eyeballs! The swordtails have only been in there for two weeks!

Any chance of this little bugger making it? I don't have a breeding net or another tank (that's cycled) to move him into... I won't be torn up if he gets eaten, but it'd be really cool if he made it!

*edit*

The more I look at it... Could it be a pleco? I added two BN's a couple days ago, and I think they're both female...

That does look an AWFUL LOT like a pleco to me, swordtail babys look like guppy babys and atm im breeding guppies and none of them look like that, so it could be a pleco!

Its a Swordtail baby. And I doubt if it'll survive unless you separate it from the adult fish.

I think it's a swordtail too - I beleve plecos lay eggs, and there's no way they could have laid and hatched in two days...

You're probably right Nick. It was only pure chance I happened to notice it. I do have some hornwort floating around the top of my tank for cover, but it's not much.

You're little one will most likely not make it without separating it from the other fish. Swordtails have a bunch of fry at a time, so it's very likely that the others have already been eaten. I know how it feels to find fry like that though...one of my swords was apparently pregnant when I got her and the same thing happened to me.

I just saw another (maybe the same) fry... One of my cherry barbs was after it... Oh well, I hadn't planned on breeding anyway. Maybe someday I'll get a smaller tank for just such a purpose.

*edit*

Let's say I wanted to raise some swordtail fry... PURELY hypothetical... Would this gizmo work for me?

that seems pretty small for the mothers, i think that putting them in that small of a space would stress them out......

I use that exact trap for breeding Platys and Guppies. The filter is useless and is best removed as fry can get stuck in it. It works great for 2 Guppies or 1 Platy at a time, don't know about Swords or Mollies though, as they're a lot bigger.

Was kind've thinking the same thing. How does one separate the babies from the rest of the tank if they're about 2mm long, though?

I'll hit my LFS tomorrow (gonna get some rocks for the plecos anyhow) to see if they have anything that would work... That contraption seems to have the idea, but it's a bit small for my swordtails.

I would get a large breeding net (not the plastic ones) that hangs over the tank to put the fry in, I have one of those and raised 4 fry in it and they did just fine. Add some plants for them to hide and feel safe in.

Good Luck!
