calculate tank size from volume to gallons

How do I find out how many gallons a tank is based on its dimensions in feet.

the tank is
w=1 ft
h= 1.5 ft
l= 3 ft

This should give me a volume of 4.5 cubic feet but I don't know how to convert that to gallons. When I did find a converter it told me that it was 33.5 gallons. Is this correct?

I was told by the person who sold me the tank that it was a 20 gallon tank but it seems really big...

from your dimensions, if it is 12 inches by 36 inches by 18 inches it's actually a 30 gallon breeder tank.

here's a link for standard aquarium sizes

There's a calculator on this site, found at http://www.fishlore.com/ConversionCalculator.htm, which agrees with what you found on your own... 33.66 US gallons / 28.04 UK gallons.

At the bottom of the page there should be an aquarium calculator, if not you can add it using your settings. Or at the top of this page look under aquarium articles.
You're correct I got 33.66 US Gallons.

If you want a more accurate measure of the actual amount of water in your tank, use the inside dimensions. Also, don't use the full height of the tank since you wouldn't fill it that way, just estimate it.

Everything you put in the tank also displaces water, so it'll be a bit less than you calculate, depending on how big a tank is and how much substrate, how much rock and driftwood, etc. are added.
