Intro thread

Hallo all!

New to fishkeeping and fishlore, and I wanted to introduce myself : ). I’ve been reading LOTS on here, and learning all I can.

I currently have a 20G aquarium, set it up back in early November, after cycling I started with some Danios, and then have been adding new fish every couple of weeks. I now have:

5 Zebra Danios
7 Neon Tetras
2 Female Guppies (1 is a half-size baby)
3 Panda Corys
2 Mystery Fry that showed up this week! (< 5mm long)

I know I am at capacity or even slightly overloaded (this is all I plan to have in this tank), but all of the fish are juveniles, my filter is 30% oversize, and I do weekly 20% water changes…so I will hopefully be ok. I would be happy to discuss things though if anyone feels strongly otherwise!

I prefer the smaller schooling species to larger cichlids or gouramis, which should help with the bio mass (Yay reading! As I’ve seen here, 6/1” tetras are not the same as 1/6” oscar!).

This was kind of a test run for me, I wanted to see if this was a hobby I enjoyed and wanted to continue….and I do! : ) I really find minding the tank, be it feeding, cleaning, or just watching, to be very stress relieving and enjoyable.

SO……………

I am planning to start a 75gallon tank in the next month or two! Haha, hooray for jumping in with both feet! Once the tank is cycled, I plan to add 2 or 3 other species, and up the schools of everything (the 20G inhabitants will be moving to the 75, and the 20 becomes the quarantine/hospital tank). My final plan is currently:

# Fish Type Adult Size Biomass
6 White Cloud Mountain Minnows 1.5” 9
6 Zebra Danios 2” 12
12 Neon Tetras 1.25” 15
6 Panda Cories 1.75” 10
3 Guppies (1 Male, 2 Female) 2” 6
8 Hengel’s Rasboras 1.25” 10
8 Black Neons 1.5” 12

Totals:
49 fish, 74 inches of fish

Thoughts? Is my math right? Obviously I don’t intend to start this all at once, and I may leave the schools 1-2 shy to account for possible fry. I’d like to cycle the 75 (bought nitrogen cycle starter w/ bacteria and currently have a spare filter media in my 20G filter so I can swap it over when I set up the 75 next week), then add the WCMM and rasporas, using the 75 as the quarantine for the first batch so I don’t upset all the fish in the 20G. After that, swap 1 group out from the 20G every two weeks or so, once the 20G is empty I’ll add the black neons and up the regular neon and panda count over another 2-4 weeks (not including quarantine, obviously).

Anyway, I’m very excited and wanted to share with some fellow enthusiasts. If you read that incredibly long-winded post, thank you for listening! : )

Welcome for the fourm.
Sounds like you've got everything planned out. Personally I'm a fan of the larger fish but sounds like it'll be a nice active tank when you get it up. Since you know what you're getting you could grab some media and seed it on your current tank to speed up the cycling for the big one.

Thanks . I've got a spare insert in the filter (room for two), that I'm going to put in the 75 to get things running.

Hey all, this is the OP on my original name. Had a problem activating it for some reason, but its working now. Here's a photo of my tank (not a huge fan of this digital camera):

The plant in front of the filter is plastic, but the rest are real. All of the plants in the foreground besides the thin spiky ones are daughters from the original amazon (9 new plants!) And its thrown up more offshoots already haha.
