The directions say to add fish (or a crawfish, in your case) at the same time. I added a bottle of SafeStart to my tank at the same time as I added my first few fish, and it worked out perfectly.

but i heard that the ammonia levels will take at least 7 days to cycle. that would mean the crawfish would suffer?

bio-spira(now safestart) was/is designed to be put in the same time as fish. You can put in a fully stocked tank of fish and add the biospira at the same time and you'll have a nearly instantly cycled tank. You may have a short spike period, but if anything it should only be a few hours. I've never had an issue when using bio-spira. Have yet to use safestart so I cant say but it's supposed to be the same thing.

It is designed specifically to have the fish added with it. The fish start prodoucing the waste and the safestart abcteria get to work. If there is not enough waste, then the bacteria dies off until it's only an amount left that is enough to handle the current bioload/wasteload. Adding ammonia will most likely damage the product and render it useless.

Bryan, just do what it says, add the fish with the TSS and you'll be fine. I just added my TSS yesterday and it just says to add fish.

If you add additional ammonia, you would be throwing off the balance the safe start is trying to create. I think you would have to if you didn't add fish right away
