| How long can a fish go without eating? As you might have seen from my other threads, I think my guppy has ammonia poisining, which I'm dealing with. But, he won't eat! He completely ignores the food, even though I've been doing 50% water changes every day. How long can he last like this? |

| Was he eating then stopped?
Changing foods might help. |

| To directly answer the question; many days. Fish don't waste calories on producing body heat, so they don't eat as much for their body weight as us warm blooded critters.
However, with a sick fish, it will be burning calories on trying to heal itself. As Lucy suggested, changing food might help, as might soaking the food in garlic juice. He might also like freeze-dried daphnia. |

| Yes, he was eating and then he stopped. He hasn't eaten in at least 4 days. I'm getting worreid about him. I put a Cheerio in the tank, thinking he might nibble on it... but, he doesn't seem interested.
I know I've mentioned this many times before, but his mouth appears to be stuck open and he looks bloated, but I don't think it's dropsy because I don't see any scales sticking out.
The really weird thing is this it looks like he has a hole in the middle of the front of his upper lip! I've never heard of anything like that before.
And a little goos news: The red spot looks a little better. |

| Some of the bacterial infections resemble him with the red spot, but I didn't find anything that looks like his lip. |

| I had a harlequin rasbora with a red spot on his side and what looked like a white/clear 'bubble' on his lower lip. After a week the 'bubble' fell off and there was a hole. I never knew what it was, but I did find an article (sorry don't have the ref) that said some fish may develop cysts on their lips. I was terrified it was cotton mouth (I know now it wasn't). The hole/bubble thing didn't seem to bother the fish at all. |
