Medicated food during cycling...Is it a smart idea?

Hello Everybody

I've found this website a couple of days ago and I've been reading all questions and really instructive answers that are helping me out also! I'm really glad for that!

My aquarium is cycling again ... I added some meds to the water in order to save my fish and end up disrupting the bacteria, so now I have ammonia again...which I'm doing my best to change the water everyday following the instructions I've received from really nice people on this website...

Since my cuttest fish is sick, I was thinking...

How about if I give my fish some medicated food in order for her to cope with the cycling? In this way I wouldn't be adding nothing on my water that would disrupt the bacteria...am I right?

I know of a gel that you feed the fish with...I've actually almost bought it today...

Also, I think my fish are sick because they have parasites on them...Now I'm scared that if I don't do something they will die....I did a search and found a medicated food for internal parasites...I'm almost sure they have tapeworm...I can actually see it...

If anyone can give me a tip I would appreciate

Thanks so much,
Melissa

Specifications:
20 gallon tank
1 adult mollie and 2 young mollies
ammonia 0.25
nitrite 1.0
nitrate 0.0
I use Prime as the conditioner
I'm changing now 25 to 50% of the water per day (actually I've changed only 25% of the water today and the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are all 0.0)

I would do daily water changes until the water cycle is over with. If you can put the sick fish in a quarintine tank that would be best and medicate there. Then the tank should be finished cycling and you can put the fish after medications back into the main tank. A q tank doesn't have to be a huge tank, 5g w/ filter, heater, and air stone would be fine.

Hi Angela, thanks for replying...buy the way...what a cute fish this one on the picture! What is it exactly?

I have a quarantine tank. It's 2.5 gallon tank. I was thinking about putting her into this small tank but I have some questions first...

- Would I be taking the same water from her 20 gallon tank and adding to the quarantine tank? I'm confused about the water...how would that be...my 20 gallon is in the middle of a cycling, so would I be taking care of this small tank the same way I'm caring for the big one? I mean doing water changes everyday?
- Another thing is that I have a filter for this small tank, but last time I remember changing the carbon filter on my 20 gallon aquarium, I also experienced a draw back in the cycling process ( Wouldn't be possible to have the quarantine tank set only with the heater and an air stone?)
I don't know if I missed anything...I've never had an aquarium before...

Well...I appreciate if you can give me more answers...
Thanks a lot
Melissa

Hi Melissa,

You certainly are between a rock and a hard place. You need to keep up the daily water changes because of the ammonia and nitrites but at the same time you are removing the medication. I would suggest that you don’t bother with the q-tank at this time as it too will not be cycled.

My suggestion at this point would be a water change followed by medication. At least the medication will be in the tank for 24 hours prior to your next water change.

In the future run the filter you have for the q-tank in your main tank. When you need to quarantine a fish you can simply transfer the established filter to the q-tank.

Thanks, That is a malawi mbuna ps polit, the other in my avatar is a yellow lab.

I would run the filter in the q tank def. But if its not cycled? I don't really think it would be a great idea to just put the fish in an uncycled tank they are better of where they are now. Just go ahead and medicate in the big tank and waterchange before meds.
