got snails

My 15 gal which is my 3.5 yr olds tank... has 5 neon tetras, 3 plateys (sp)... 4 baby plateys and a ghost shrimp... and SNAILS EVERYWHERE>>>>

I also have a 20 gal with 5 tiger barbs...

and a 55 gal with 4 angels and 4 coreys and 1 cuckoo catfish..

my question is.. I have to clean out the 15 gal as its has exploded with snails... how do I disperse the fish from this tank so they all survive the angels or tiger barbs... I know my angels will go for the neon tetras they ate 2 when I tested them to see how well they would do with neon tetras...

can anyone give me suggestions on the best way to sort this small problem.

I wouldn't think you'd have to take the fish out. I've read in several other post about this that you can put a piece of lettuce and leave it for awhile, all the snails will gather on it and then you can pull the piece of lettuce out. Keep doing this until all snails are gone. Snails are a really good sign of how much extra food is in your tank once you get them under control you could lessen the amount of food you give your fish.

Heres a list of methods
  • Puffers / Loaches (YoYo) although your tank size dosnt really allow you to ad d these fish.
  • Snail Chemicals (warning may contain coppers which are harmful to fish) not the best method. even if they are fish safe, decaying snails will affect your water parameters.
  • The glass jar method, using a clean glass jar, you can put lettuce in it and sink it to the bottom the snails should go into the jar. slowly taking them out.
  • manually taking them out one by one.
  • also to reduce snail reproduction try not to overfed limit their supply of food.

I just do the squish method. When see one I squish it. The fish appreciate the snack and its strangely satisfying to pop them knowing I am reducing the invasion. The shells come out when I vacuum. Every month I do a good sweep with the vacuum as well to get the little ones out.

Usually they'll gather overnight. If not, maybe you should check during the night, like turn the lights off as soon as it gets dark and keep it pitch black in there, then check after a few hours (some of them hide during the day)
I know when I drop in an algae wafers my billion ramshorns have quite the party, and they all show up within a few minutes.

Hey, if you're only in Arizona.... it's only like a 6-10 hr drive LOL
