I wanted to get a fish that would do good by itself in a 20g.

Like a Pearl or such? They get to be about 4 inches, so it's be a beautiful fish in a 20 gal. Maybe make a planted tank? That would be beautiful.

Why do you only want 1 fish in your 20gall anyway?

A Gourami would be a very good choice, especially pearl.

A RTS would be fine on it's own in a 20gal. Rainbow Sharks need bigger tanks.

If you go with a paradise fish make sure you have a lid that is secure they are jumpers, but that would be what I would go for.

Because i'm afraid if I have lots of fish in there I won't love them or get attached to them like if I had one happy fish

If you want a fish to love and get attached to, puffers are the most personable fish you can find. And living alone is perfect for them.
