Under gravel filter with fancy goldies?

Hi everyone, I just had one quick question: because goldfish give off so much ammonia I wanted to know if using a UFG would help keep up with the ammonia output of the goldfish (because UFG's are bio filters). Is this a case where a UFG work be a good thing? I felt that It would be very hard to keep ammonia levels down without extra biological filtration going in the tank. so should I use the UFG? I know its generally discouraged but you need lots of bio and mechanical filtration with goldfish. I would love to hear from you! thanks again!

imo, too much waste would build up around that area and under it for goldies...just triple the size of the HOB or canister filtration and im sure you will be golden..(canisters are my fav for big bio load fishies)

I agree with Shawnie. The amount of poo they produce is a negative with UGFs. It gets sucked under the plates and gunks them up.

A reverse UGF combined with a HOB would actually work really well, though (I'm currently running one with a koi, and it's keeping the gravel wonderfully clean.

gramps and grams are usually old school fish keepers...I know mine was LOL ...she kept goldies with bettas for years!! and no heated tanks and always ugf's...it was no wonder the bettas all had ripped tails when they went to sleep!

Fishlover-i have a penguium bio-wheel and a corner filter box-one of those little cheapie's and i put marbles in it to weigh it done and a little bubbler attaches to it and you put filter floss in it and it keeps the tank nice and clean lol When i go to vacume there is really only a bit of mess lol. But these things are hard to find but they are $3.99 over here and it's well worth it lol. Just an added way to filter cheap and keep's it nice and clean. I guess if you have a big tank, you might need 2-of them but they do a good job. P.S. the penguium is a 350 and i also have one for a 20-gallon added. so lots of filtration and super clean. i don't think i would use an ugf as i have seen them and all the gunk would collect under it and i don't see it would do any good imo. bella

so go with 1-2 HOBS for my 30 and I have 7 corner filters in the boxes Lol! I bought them on clearance at my LPS. I guess I'll be putting them to good use. they are noisy as heck though but I love the bubbling sound, its soothing to me. thanks for the help!
