Help!!!!!!

Hello! I have a little problem i hope someone out there can help me with. For christmas my boyfriend got me a 10 gallon tank. I set it up and put fish in it. Now, after i already bought fish and put them in he tells me not to put fish in cause the water needs to cycle. Ok, so i have been reading stuff on this fourm to try to help me cycle faster but i am still unsure what to do. I have a 10 gallon with 1 male guppy, 2 female guppys, 2 sunburst platies (1 male 1 female), 2 gold barbs that i believe are both males 2 black skirt tetra which i think are males also but im not too sure and a snail. And i have a 5 gallon set up with 4 baby guppys that one of my females had the day i got her and she died while birthing them so as far as i know she only had 4 unless the other fish ate the others and a pleco is in the 5 gallon that i cant get out cause he hides in the filter (I put him accidently, i didnt know that a 5 gallon was too small for a pleco), so i have to wait til it comes out to switch him to the 10 gallon and the snail will go to the 5 gallon. I do water changes every day to try to keep the levels down but i heard it makes the cycle go slower. My question is what can i put in the tank to make the cycle go faster so i dont lose any fish. I currently use AmQuel+ for the ammonia but i still have high ammonia readings so i dont know if its taking the ammonia away so the nitrites and nitrates cant form in the filter, I also but some plants and some gravel from another tank that had been set up for a while in my tank to help the cycle but it doesnt seem like its doing the trick. If there is something else i sure be doing to get the cycle moving along quicker please let me know!!!

Hi Silver. Sorry to tell you but your tank is overstocked. With that amount of fish you'll never cycle the tank because of the amount of waste being produced. The Guppies, barbs and tetras might be ok, but I'd think about returning the others if you can, especially the Pleco who'll need a 55gal minumum tank size.

People have recommended prime to detoxify the ammonia for 24 hours. You will have ot upgrade soon for the pleco or sell it. He needs at least 55 gallons or more to be happy as he can get 12-18"

Just keep doing 50% water changes everyday until you either get a larger tank, or sell back most of the fish.

I would firstly suggest you toss the AmQuel and purchase either Prime or Stress Coat +. These products will detoxify the ammonia in the tank while leaving it available for bacteria growth.

Nothing at this point can be added to the tank to speed up the cycle. 50% daily water changes and Prime or Stress Coat + is in order.

If you have a common pleco they can grow up to 18” in size so even the 10 gallon tank will not be suitable. Even if the pleco is of the smaller species such as the clown pleco they too will soon out grow a 10 gallon tank as they grow up to 6”.

Thanks for the replies. I realize that I need a bigger tank, my mom is going to give me her 55 gallon in a couple of weeks so i can use the 10 gallon for the babys and im going to use the 5 gallon as a hospital tank.

its not a good idea to keep male & female guppies together, babies for sure.

Ok good.Ihope everything works out for you. Please keep us updated. I would also use the 10 as a quarantine tank in case you plan on getting more fish.

Welcome Silverbaby
I wish you nothing but luck..That's awesome that your getting your moms 55..the pleco will be very happy there...For right now you have a heavy load..Just keep up with the daily 50% waterchanges and invest in some Prime...I also noticed you have some barbs and tetra's..I know for sure the tetras are a schooling fish and are best kept in groups of 5..Not sure about the barbs..You can google it...It wouldn't be a bad idea to return some of the fish untill you get the 55..It would be easier on them and you.

That's quite a bio-load. You're going to have to do a lot of water changes if you add anything else to that 5 gal.

silver as you're in the states you might want to look for a product called tetra safe start. It won't "Fix" you're tank, they're too over stocked to cycle but it would give you the max amount of bacteria to try and make you're job easier... it would be tricky though, maybe look into a big plastic rubber maid tub as a temporary solution till you get the 55? make a sponge filter and dose with safe start and add a few fish, help lighten you're load a bit.

Add anything else to the 5gal and they'll eat the babies. Maybe you could get a breeder box and put the fry in there?
