Keep in mind that almost all fish available were bred & born in a tank.
They don't have the ocean in mind, or a large lake.
They are in captivity, keeping an animal in captivity active is something that has to be considered, no matter what type of animal it is.
That is why we add decor, plants, rocks, caves - it keeps them entertained.

Of course. I am a huge cory fan. I want to get some albinos and found a 6 pack on aquabid. I plan on getting them in a few weeks. I try to find the best deals and take what I can get

1 free 15 gal tank

$40.00 got me a 15 gal, 29 gal, 10, gal and a 20 gal

Only tank being used is my 29 and that has 3 long fin albino plecos. If I could afford a 100 gal I would have bought that.

where I am going with this reply? I dunno lol!

choffman is a Great girl..
amanda.. my dad has 2 cichlids with african algea eaters.. and if anything goes in there cichlid or not the 2 cichlids would kill it.. just depends on the personality of the fish.. for instance some jeweled cichlids get along with community fish.. "Rare" but its happened

and i agree a 100% with darksol on comparing fish to the tank.. i just think a 20g tank should be the smallest (if thats all you can afford or are looking for something small) you should consider. i mean a fish can only roam the tank for a certain amout of times till the highlight of its day starts to depend on feeding time..
I think you mean schoaling. Which is quite different.
And as I said, I discussed this with a member who has kept many many species of cories for many years. And I had 3 at first, but one died. The remaining two are doing just fine, and will swim about and play like happy cories do.

A fish can only roam a tank of any size a certain amount of time before they get bored. That's why I rearrange the decor in my tanks every once in a while (esp. for my puffers) so that they don't get bored.

You are perfectly entitled to the opinion that you only want to keep larger than 20 gallon aquariums. However, calling people cruel because they have smaller aquariums is in very bad taste in my opinion.

great point amanda about fish being in captivity all there lives.. so wouldnt it make them happy beyond measures for them to be let loose into a 55g tank or larger?

African cichlids are best kept in overcrowded groups. That is common knowledge.
Jewels are NOT community fish, as they can get very aggressive; especially during breeding.

omg.
I can't handle this thread anymore.
It's driving me CRAZY.
Corey - you're trying to put a 3in. puffer in a 55 gal. tank.
Please - do some research before you make a post.

You can't just throw out a number and say that all fish will be happy in there. Some fish actually wouldn't do well in such a large aquarium, and many would still be way too crowded. It's a ratio thing, not just a set number.

100% agree

Or, in the case of a dwarf puffer, a 1" puffer in a 55 gallon tank. You wouldn't be able to ever find the little thing, lol.

And the fact is, yes, keeping fish in aquariums will cause them to have less space than in the wild. It's a fact of fishkeeping that we have to face. So, taken from that perspective, we are all cruel for keeping fish at all.

I do understand where your comming from CoreyCat ..It gives me great joy to give my betta a home in a 10 gallon tank when most are in bowls..Knowing that he his living a good life compared to what he had .All of my tanks are understocked...But if nobody kept fish they would ALL be in the wild living free....We as fish lovers just do the best we can to provide them with as much room and happiness as we can...We follow the min. tank size sometimes bigger and follow experts advice to keep them healthy and happy. While wild fish have a free life they also have to fight other fish and hunt for food...Where in a tank they get handed nice frozen, live and flake food..As fish keepers were all just doing the best we can.

PinkFloyd.. you again.. lol
i apoligize if the term cruel has offended anyone.. like pinkfloyd said its just my opinion..
and about the cories.. do you expect them to have there head down and show signs of depression?? would you rather have a friend? or a family? try to not think of what you think is right for them but more of what you would like if you were them...

As I've said many times before, I've consulted many other long-time cory keepers about this. And they do have a friend.
And don't mock the idea of fish showing depression, it definitely happens.

I keep 4 Corys. They don't seem overly concerned that theres 4 of them and not 5.

Of course it depends on the fish. And that is why we say that you cannot apply a blanket statement that anything 20g and under is cruel. Because it depends on the fish
