Soft water, high pH ??

Hello!

My tanks readings are:

ammonia: 0, nitrite: 0, nitrate: 15ppm, pH: 7.3 and soft water -7.5dh.

Yes the tank cycled with Stability believe it or not.

Now I thought that pH and hardness went hand in hand, so soft water=low pH

Will the soft water and higher pH effect the fish?

I also think I'd like to get the pH at neutral, but keep the water soft as it is. If I put a pH lowering product will it soften the water aswell?

Thanks!

What kind of fish are you keeping/planing to keep? 7.3 is pretty dang close to neutral and I wouldn't mess with it unless you are keeping African cichlids (in which case you want your pH to go up) or something like a wild discus (which can't be kept in a 10 gal anyway)

My pH is 6.5, 6.4ish and all fish are fine. The only drawback is livebearers actually don't breed well, while danios and barbs breed like crazy.

That ph is really not high, 7.4 and below are considered acidic. The 7.8+ ph's will have the higher alkalinity.

hmmm... i want a community setup with cories, angels, rams the cardinals and gouramis..

can i keep guppies and swordtails with the water the way it is?

after hearing your comments i prolly wont mess with the pH, its just the test kit gave me the impression anything over 7 was alkaline

well thanks!

What size is your tank?

Believe it or not, your guppies might pick on your swordtails. I know you'd think it would be the other way around, but my male guppy harassed my swords so bad I had to move him to a different tank.

my tank is 107 gallons, so they should have plenty of space to get away from each other ??

so my question about the guppies and swordtails was more in regard to if they could tolerate the soft water ?? and mollies too... could I keep mollies in that water?

obviously i'm not going to put in every type of fish I mentioned because that might overstock.

thanks

I think your ph will be fine for the fish you are keeping. Ph isn't that crucial. Most fish will adapt just fine to a ph between 6 and 8.

But what about the hardness of my water (7.5dh) don't livebearers need harder water??

Thanks -I hope someone can help me
