Nitrite Readings

Will nitrite show up on a test before ammonia begins to subside or does Ammonia have to be headed down (or at zero) before Nitrite tests positive?

When you see nitrites rise the ammonia should start to drop.

ammonia rises, the falls, nitrite rises, then falls, then nitrate rises, but does not completely dissapear

Thanks. Still have some time to go. On the plus side, all 6 Danios are still alive!

Danio's are the hardiest fish alive. One of mine got stuck in the filter for over 12 hours once and when I freed it just swam away! It's still alive!

mlfly, when I set up my 36 gallon I didn't know about fishless cycling and I didn't know you were supposed to do waterchanges when cycling with fish. I has cycled with 4 Danios. One died about two weeks into the cycle, one died about two weeks after my tank cycled, and the other two are still going strong. So, I would fully expect your Danios to survive if you keep up with the water changes.

jdhef - how do your Rainbows get along with the Dwarf Gourami's? My wife wants those (this is her tank, I'm just the water engineer) but was concerned about compatibility.

The Rainbows get along fine with the Dwarf Gourami's.

Some good news. It's the 39th day and Ammonia has dropped to .25 and the Nitrite reading has moved off the cyan grid and is about 1/2 way to .25. That's the first sign I've seen of the cycling. The 6 Danios are still alive and well.
