help! choosing compatible fish??? :S

hey i have a 39L (10g) tank which is planted, and cycling. i need ideas on which fish i could possibly put in. i'm pretty sure i will get 5 tetras but i was thinking a 'center piece' fish aswell, maybe even two? which fish would be a good mix with the tetras and also fit my tank size. im a newbie so they'll prob need to be easy to look after. any suggestions please!!!? thankyou.

Sadly if you put it 5 tetras i would say your full, but as a centre piece you could try a sparkling gourami if you do want the 5 tetras

10g is too small for what most folks would consider a centerpiece fish. Still, you might be able to do some smaller fish and one slightly larger, more colorful fish.
First of all, what kind of tetras are you thinking? That will impact how much room, if any, you have left in the tank.

I figure you are going with small sized tetras, a school of 5 Neons would do great there. As centerpiece... uhmm, I figure a peaceful tempered betta but you need to be sure he/she is easy going first! I have had mixed results in Betta-Neon combinations.

If you still want to go with a beautiful male Betta as centerpiece, a school of Cherry Barbs would work easier, but that would imply giving up on your Tetras idea...

A couple of dwarf neon rainbows might work well, they have amazong colour to them when they start to get older, also they only grow to about 2.5 inches

Hey Langy,

A great tetra that is easy to care for, and that could be put in your tank are neon tetras. They have been metioned before, but I would really suggest that you get them! They are great little guys that are colourful, and look great with dark substrate! They are hardy, and would love being in your 10 gallon!

it would be best to get a female betta.

also ive heared that tetras should be in schools of 6 or more but they might be enough for a center piece if your going with neon

bettas male or fem dont usually work in a community tank..some of us have them there but we also have a back up plan (another tank) if it doesnt work...I wouldnt recommend anyone new to keeping fish to even attempt a betta in the small community tank..its too risky ....and fems are just as agressive if not more in all of my experiences with them....
