Stupid Questions

Hello,

I have a stupid question - what is LFS? LocalFish store??

Also, I have 2 blue gouramis, that spend most of their time just sitting, instead of swimming around or anything - is that normal?
I did have some tetras as well, but they all died. I think it was most likely ammonia poisining (My mum bought me a tank for xmas - complete with fish, didnt know about cycling) but I am worried there might have been some aggresion from the gouramis, they certainly seem happier by themselves. Anyway - Im wondering if it is a bad idea now to add some tetras? I like the neon ones. Any thoughts?
thanks

Hi,

No question is stupid too ask, the term LFS refers to Local Fish Store you are correct as for the two gourami, they reactions can be caused by either shyness or poor water as you said the fish were added without prior knowledge of the nitrogen cycle. i wouldn't add anymore fish until the tank is completely cycled.

As for test kits do you own the Ammonia, Nitrates, Nitrites, pH kits since your tank may not be completely cycled it might be advisable to watch your water parameters with caution. if you find your tank is not cycled which in the case may be you might need to do daily water changes to ensure that your fish are safe from ammonia poisoning also what water conditioner are you using.

Sorry i tried to keep this as short as possible also WELCOME

Mike

EDIT: Before i can give you advise on stocking what is the size of your tank (22L is small even for two gouramis)

Hello and welcome to fishlore
How nice to get a tank and fish for Christimas, fish keeping is a lot of fun but it takes time to learn what is needed to keep your fish happy. I hope that you take some time to read up in the freshwater beginners section of the forum on the advice on starting a new tank. I have moved your thread to the freshwater fish beginners forum as you will get more responses there.
As you suspected, your tank is not cycled and it will take awhile to get there. For now, since you do have fish in the tank you will have to do daily water changes to protect the fish you have left from ammonia poisoning.
Your Gourami's are probably feeling the affects of the ammonia present in your tank and are not very active. They should get along fine with the neons. What size is your tank?
Do you have a water test kit to measure your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels? You would need this to determine how far along you are as your tank goes through its cycle. For now, daily water changes of 50% is recommended and with every water change I would suggest using a product called Prime (water conditioner) or one that the label says it detoxifies ammonia.Doing this daily will insure that your ammonia levels do not get so toxic that it will kill off your fish as any ammonia present in the tank is toxic to them.
Also I would not add anymore fish to your tank until the tank is cycled as you are putting a lot of stress on the fish while in an uncycled tank and run the chance of loosing more.
Best of luck to you and your fish.
