should I add salt to my new tank?

Hey all, do you guys and girls go ahead and add salt to your new tanks or wait to have your water tested? I just added water to my tank and wonder if I should go ahead and add some aquarium salt. Going to have a cichlid tank. Thanks for any help.

I really wouldnt add any salt to a freshwater tank, except for some extreme circumstances. Really, there is no reason to add any except when the fish are sick and even then there are alternatives to salt which can be damaging or at least annoying so a good variety of freshwater fish.

it is annoying to most freshwater fish other than livebearers and goldfish. I wouldn't recommend adding it unless you are going to stock with either of the above types of fish.

I have never put salt in my cichild tanks, for keeping the water just right I put crushed coral substrate in there and limestone to build the caves it keeps my pH up at about 8.0 all the time.
