nitrogen cycle. You need to let your tank cycle before you can put fish in. There are some great articles you can read here on this site that can is explain it very well to you, but for the time being and just in case...
Fish produce waste and excess food breaks down which puts
ammonia into your tank.
Bacteria builds up on the filter in order to deal with this problem during the cycle.
What you will see during your cycle is a spike in ammonia while the bacteria is building up.
Then, your nitrites will spike, because the bacteria on the filter is converting the ammonia into nitrites.
Finally, your nitrates will go up and eventually level out around 5-20ppm, and you're ready to add fish!
You will need some form of
test kit in order to establish where you are in your cycle, because the time frame can very greatly from tank to tank.
If you already know this information, I apologize, but so many people on this site have had problems because the didn't know about the cycle, it's better to be safe than sorry!
