10 gal but what can go in

ok so woke up this morning and my Guppie, Deano, in my q tank has died (kept Him in there to keep the tank Cycled in case of any disease outbreaks in main tank), anyway since this tank was kept in my Sons room he has asked if he can pick the next fish/s to go in the tank, which my wife has kindly said of course he can, without asking me.

now this tank is a 10 gal (high) tank which is fully cycled, all perameters are fine (nitrates where a little higher than i normally like this morning when i found Deano dead) with Amonia = 0, Nitrites = 0, Nitrates = 25, but i have cleaned out the tank when removing the fish and done a water change and added some food into the tank to keep it cycled and am hoping to go to the LFS tomorrow

now what i am wondering is what Fish or selection of fish would you recommend i 'suggest' to my son when we get there.

my initial thoughts are for a betta or a school of 5 tetra's or another Guppie, but just wondering if you can think of any others that would suit an older boy and stay 'cool'

I'm really sorry to hear about Deano.

A betta would love a 10g. Sometimes they'll tolerate cories or otos with them. So that's certainly a choice in that size tank.

PFP will love me for this....a dwarf puffer. Possibly 2 with a lot of plants. Not positive about keeping 2 together.

Glo fish come in cool colors. You could keep a small school.

The dwarf puffers would be good , if you cant find any puffers or your son doesnt like them, you could always try and tempt him with sparkling gouramis 2 of those owuld be great in a 10g

Good suggestions..I have 3 of those!!..I love them too..A betta would love that 10 gallon, Glofish, like lucy said are very pretty and stay very active, they are very hardy and would be good for a kids room. Puffers are the sweetest looking fish and you could get by with having 2 dwarf puffers in there if you have lots of plants and hiding spots. The dwarf is the only kind that would work in a 10 gallon though and they get about a inch long and you'll have to feed them snails. You could also get any kind of dwarf gourami but I would only recommend 1 male and the rest female..Males are brightly colored and females have very little color to them. You could get a school of a smaller tetra too. Good luck.

very interesting idea about the puffers A I Hadnt thought about them and i have a nice 'infestation' of snails in my main tank so that would sort 2 problems in one. thanks everyone so far

Just a note, puffers can't eat MTS if that's what's infesting your main tank...the shells are too hard for the puffer's teeth.

I agree with all suggestions, but let me stick in a note for a dwarf gourami. They come in a gorgeous array of colors. I wouldn't suggest getting more that one dwarf gourami for a ten gallon as they will most likely become very aggressive with each other. They are peaceful community fish, so you could get other small tankmates to go with it. Best of luck, and be sure to let us know what your son picks!
