New aquarium : different fish.

Hi,

We got a 10 gallon aquarium from a friend...and a couple of days later we bought the fish to put in the tank...

We are wondering if the fish we bought go well together. The guy at the pet store said they do, but after doing some research on the fish we bought we are not too sure any more..

We bought 2 angelfish, 2 bloodfin tetra, 2 lemon tetra, 1 cherry barb and 1 yellow barb...They are all babies right now.

Also how would we know if the fish are male or female?

And is the number of fish ok for the size of our tank?

Thank you.

Hi
If I were you I'd take the angels back, they'll get too large and aggressive for such a small tank. I'm not too familiar with the tetras and barbs, but I know those fish will do better in large groups of the same kind rather than just a few of each. I think a school of maybe 5 fish would pretty much fill up your tank.
Hope this helps a bit.

Hi and welcome to Fishlore!

You also have fish in an uncycled tank. Read through this article (http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm) before adding anymore. I'm sure other members will offer information as well to best see the fish you have remain healthy.

Hi jminesh Welcome to Fish Lore

I'm sorry to say the fish you've chosen aren't suitable for a tank your size.
Many of us have made the mistake of listening to the store when it comes to stocking advice.
The angels do best in at least a 20g tall tank.
Your tetras are schooling fish and prefer more of their own kind as do the cherry barbs.
Unfortunately your tank isn't large enough to handle several schools of fish.
You could go with 5 Bloodfins or 5 Cherry barbs
If at all possible, you should look into getting a bigger tank or better yet, returning your fish and cycling your tank fish less. (This is explained in the link I'm providing)

I'm sorry I couldn't give you better news.

Here's a link to some beginner topics that will help you along. Please pay close attention to the information on the nitrogen cycle.
