if tank was sort of dutch Aq(planted tank), probably have trumpet snail (tiny long spiral).
If want to remove them, use small palstic jar's lid 9 wider the better). Middle of the night, put lid and hod it down w/ some gravel, with some food. Can pull the lid out when snails are on the lid. adding salt is not a good idea for planted tank.
But answer to your question is to add whatever amount of water you replaced during water change. For example, if changes 10 G of water, just add 10 gal worth of salt, that is if you want to keep recommended level. But as I said, I would not add salt to planted tank.

I agree with Cerianthus, salt can be deadly for most live plants and some fish too. I am a big user of salt for treatments, I use salt bath/dips for short term use in QT, if I treat the whole tank for..say ick or a fungus after treatment I do large water changes 50-75% everyother day for 5 days. I do keep salt in my guppy and betta fry tanks, guppy tank has floating plants that die and I replace on a regular basis due to the salt-I use 1tlb/10g and as Cerianthus said if you remove 10g replace salt per your 10g salt needs.

if you have room in your tank you could get a loach (clown or yoyo) to eat the snails. This Link has some good info about loaches that eat snails but some can be very hard to find (thanks to Carol who gave me the link in another thread)
