Guppy Dominance

so me and my girlfriend just got a new tank for christmas. i used to have a 55 gallon until a power outage while i was on vacation killed the tank full of Angel fish. half foot pleco. clown loach. various other freshwater beauties. so we bought a 29 gallon tank to start over. The guppies we bought are acting weird. not bad. but strange. The males seem dominant. But when i put in some food for my bottom feeder (catfish and the food is tetramin the rich mix) and the guppies seem to like it more than the peppered catfish. but the dominant role switched during feeding. the one pregnant female seem to dominant the food and chased off the 2 males in the tank anytime they came near. just wondering if this is normal behavior for guppies. i know the males bite a bit at eachother but never seen the females chase males off before. usually they are very nuetral

Welcome to Fishlore!!!
Personal experience from being pregnant..SHE'S HUNGRY....That would be my guess..I'm not a guppy expert though..Her aggressive behavior during feeding might change after she has had her babies. Other members will be along to give you more answers..again welcome to fishlore and we LOVE pics around here..

Welcome to FishLore

I am not an expert on guppies but generally fish will find a pecking order and sort that out in time.

You mentioned that you got this tank for Christmas, I was just wondering how you cycled your tank so quickly?

My Platys have a pecking order, 1 of the males and 1 of the females are dominant and they always are first to get food and chase off the others. Guppys are similar fish so it's probably just normal behavior

I raise guppies and the females are much more aggressive than males in my tanks anyways, females are bigger, meaner, eat more, poop more... all the males want is sex....and food. Guppies go after any type of food dropped in the tank, and will eat themselfs to death.....

welcome to fishlore!!!
whats the ratio of males to fems with your guppies? the boys like 2-4 fems each and if you have more males then fems, that pecking order will change and your boys will get more agressive...at feeding time for guppies, they ALL turn into psycho's! so thats totally normal...id feed your catfish at night when the lights are out..at least give him a chance to get some food

choffman....LOL!!! I lovvvvvve your answer
