| DIY or storebought aquarium stand? hi everyone, for my new new aquarium my parents want me to build a stand from plans with my Grandfather who is a carpenter by profession and hobby. the cost for building one would be like $50 and buying one about $140. they thought I was going to buy a piece of garbage made from press board. the stand I was going to buy is a All glass aquarium brand pine stand made from real pine wood not press board. Aside from the cost factor what would be better, I would want the stand to be identical to the AGA pine one. my main concerns are the ability of the DIY stand holding the weight of the water. and also what kind of wood should be used? I know my Grandfather could tell me but I wanted your opinions too. please respond, your input would be greatly appreciated! |

| FL- I think the DYI will be better as, your grandfather can brace it and do all the thing's that carpenders do to protect the water weight lol, where as at the store there is no brace ect; and could be a mishap and you don't want that. And you can let him know the kind you want and ask for good wood suggestion's lol hope this helps FL. bella |

| We built ours for the 55. I think the DIY would be best. Your grandfather I'm sure would do a beautiful job. Far stronger and more secure than a store bought one. Also a nice project to do together. : ) |

| Good call on the DIY stand Anyone with decent carpentry knowledge can build a sturdier stand than most store-bought ones...since he's an actual carpenter he could build a much sturdier one, and probably better-looking to boot.
That's awesome that you have him to help you out and teach you some tricks, and that he's willing to do it in the first place. |

| Yeah, Fishlover;, so much safer;-if you buy one there is no guarantee that it will hold water weight, but grandfather can guarantee that as your mom will kill him, if he don't lol.bella |

| My son - in - Law builds all their tank stands and they are great. The really unique thing about making your own is that you can reinforce and brace them where you think it my need it.
Do you have the plans yet?

| Yes, Fishlover Butterfly is right and it is much more solid and would last for years and least of all to say- You can have a very unique one at that. Something that no-one else has lol. Go for it Fishlover and we want to see the plans lol.I knit dog sweaters as an example and not 2-sweaters are alike as i make everyone diff; so the dog has an unique one, and flower arrangements.ect; so think of something you would really like that would be diff; and propose that to your Grandfather and i'm sure he will accomodate you. good luck with it bella |

| I’m would think that commercially built aquarium stand would come with a limited warranty. The keyword though is “limited”. I’m sure they would be happy to replace your stand should it happen to fall apart due to a manufacturing defect. But they would not be held responsible of incidental damages however caused.
So yes they would likely replace your stand should it collapse but would not be held responsible for your shattered tank, loss of fish or damages caused to your house however caused. |
