Power Heads and Heaters

Hey guys..The 125 gallon tank I bought came with two Penguin 1140 submersible power heads the flow is 300 GPH on each one...(It came with the boxes) It also came with a air pump..Do I really need to hook the airpump up with airstones if I have the 2 powerheads going??..What is the best place to power heads?? Also It came with a Stealth heater 250watts..Is that big enough for a 125gallon tank Thanks is advance.

I just happen to have my Stealth Heater fact sheet sitting right beside me. It suggests that the 250 watt model is good for tanks up to 75 gallons. I have the 200 watt Stealth heater for my 35 gallon tank.

I should have provided you this link in my first post sorry. Heaters are kind of interesting as it has less to do with tank size as it does with ambient air temperature. In other words… the colder the room the bigger the heater has to be. If however your room temperature is only a few degrees cooler then your tank need to be you can actually get away with surprisingly small heaters even in a large tank.

And the recommendation I mentioned from the data sheet is suggested if requiring to heat a tank 18F above the room temperature.

But here’s a great heater guide. The page is a little mixed up, read the instructions at the bottom of the page and the chart at the top of the page will make sense.

Thanks for the Link Dozey!!!...The tank is actually in the same room as our fireplace!!!..That's good news...I'll set it up with this heater and monitor it to see what happens..Thanks again Dozey.

You’re more then welcome. And please keep in mind your year round ambient temperature. It’s winter and you have your fire place to keep you all snug and comfy. But in the summer do you crank up the central air and turn the room into an ice box?

Also, do you ever go away for a couple of days in the winter, and not have the fireplace going? If it were me I would add an additional heater. That way you also have some back up in case one heater fails.
