betta has fin rot

I noticed the fins looking ragged yesterday. Today is twice as bad so im getting ready to put some maracyn 2 and aquarium salt in his 10 gallon tank. The tank isn't completely cycled yet, but I test the water with API master test kit and do a water change when there is sings of ammonia or nitrite. Right now there is 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrate. The pH is 7.6. His water is kept between 75 and 80. My main question is will the maracyn 2 kill what good bacteria is there. If so should I take the bio filter out and put it in my 29gallon tank till the meds are done with.

Hello,
I did some reading on the pamphlet that comes with the maracyn two. It states that it will not disrupt the beneficial bacteria during treatment. Just make sure if you have carbon in the filter to take it out while you are medicating the tank. Also, Im not sure but I think that using salt with the betta is not a good idea.

You should see improvement within two days with Maracyn. I've just finished treating my betta with it and he's doing wonderfully.

I use Epsom salt with all my Bettas with no ill effects and I have over 200 Bettas, 100 are new fry, 32 at age 92 days; and I use 1 tlb epsom salt per 5 gal of water, I have never had any problems with any type of fungus. Epsom salt are also good for constipation and swim bladder problems but at higher doses for shorter times. Changing at least 50% of the water daily will also help, dirty water can be deadly for fish.
Are his fins fuzzy? are you sure it is fungus how is he eating how old is he??
Most state that life span on a betta is about 2 years; but I have 2 males and 3 females that are pushing 5 years to date...good luck

He is eating good and seems to be very energetic. As for his age I've only had him a month. He was a wal-mart rescue and don't know his exact age.

He's so pretty. I'm partial to blue bettas. Thanks for sharing the pic. What's his name?

Pristine water, Garlic guard (or garlic juice) Vita-chem and Fish Protector and/or Stess coat go a long way towards helping fin rot.

Good luck, I hope he heals quickly.

My two year old son named him blue. Blue seems to much like a dogs name so I just refer to him as the Betta.

I used Triple Sulfa as directed on the box and added prime every 24 hours. I'm sure I detected improvement after 24 hours but definitely no visible signs at 48 hours. I finished the treatment process anyway. The hardest part was thinking about replacing the filter/carbon when finished. I ended up buying loose carbon and refilling the old one so as not to destroy the bacteria.

There seems to be some growth with his fins. Today I'll be useing the last of the maracyn two powder packs. Is there anything I should use until his fins are conpletely healed.

I'm glad he's getting better.

As long as there's improvement, using the products that were mentioned above should help.

Well, I knew I should have kept my mouth shut as the fin rot is back. I know I'll get it fixed but I wish I could explain why my $4 fish is now an investment rather than a pet!!!

More so than any other fish, my wife and I are really attached to our Betta.
