Floating fish

What is the proper way for fl;oating fish, Or intrducing them to your tank? My neighbor just brought my daughter a cory cat for for x-mas. I still have it baged. Any help would be helpful.
Thanks Tina

Corys are so cute.
Let the bag float in the tank for about an hour. Every 10-15 minutes add a little tank water to his bag.
When the bag gets too full toss out some of the water and continue adding tank water.

Thanks Lucy,
You are always so quick to respnd. I just hope that I don't have any more problems. I am still try to cycle the tank almost there but not quit. I am keeping up with the water changes and prime and its getting better.

The “drip method” is preferred. Place the fish in a container that can hold at least double the amount of the water in the bag. If possible place and air stone in the container. Use an air hose with and an air value to create and create a siphon from your tank water. Adjust the air valve to allow a very slow drip but steady drip into the container. The goal is to double the bagged water amount in 2 to 3 hours. Lower the container into your tank and let the fishy swim away. If an air stone in the container isn’t possible I’d suggest reducing the time to 1 hour.

Of course at this time it would be best to place the new fish into a q-tank to avoid infecting your tank with any nasties that he may have brought home from the LFS.

If none of the above is doable, simply float the bag in your tank for 30 to 60 minutes open the bag, hold sideways in the tank and let the fishy swim out.

When I acclimatise fish by floating the bag for 1/2 hour let the temperatures even out before adding 1/2 a cup of water every 15 minutes until the bag is full.

I net the fish out of the bag and avoid letting any of the water in the bag going into the tank, as there is a possibility there may be something bad in the water.

I never trust a fish shop to keep pristine water conditions and would hate to add ammonia to a tank or diseases. Once the fish has been netted and is in the tank i would chuck the water in the bag and the bag away.

I agree with Dozey a quarantine tank would be good unless he is the only fish in the tank.

Be careful with that tank not being cycled. Cories seem to be pretty sensitive to water conditions. Also cories like to be in groups.
