Q-Tank

I have a 3 gallon tank that I’d like to keep for a q-tank but my space is very limited. As nice as it would be to keep this tank set up and cycled all the time I just don’t see it being very viable in my situation.

So, can I keep a bottle of Terra Safe Start (TSS) on hand and just set up the tank when needed and add TSS as needed? Will TSS and any meds I might have to use mess with each other?

What no betta?

lol just kidding. For a QT tank alot of people recommend plastic storage tubs/containers. They're cheaper then tanks and really work just as well. Keep a piece of sponge seeded in the big tank and just use it to cycle the tub for any new commers.
However you're plan sounds fine to. Just remember that safestart is only good for a year.

You could do that.
It depends on the meds. Some kill the bacteria and others claim not to. It depends on what you're treating for.

A less expensive alternative would be to put extra filter sponges in your established tank. It'll take about 2 weeks to seed one.
When you need to set up your Q tank, just add the extra sponge to seed it.

Your lucky to be able to find Tetra Safe Start...I think that you could do that...You'd have to keep a close eye on the levels..but I think that would work well for your situation...As far as meds...I saw on another post that some meds do have a effect on your cycle..but it was almost always listed in the pamphlet that comes inside the box. Since Tetra safe start contains the same bacteria as a cycled tank I would assume that it would have the same effect with the Tetra safe start.
