| Tankmates for Betta I was going to move my betta out of a 5 gallon tank into a 10 gallon tank because I was told I couldn't keep any tankmates in the 5 gallon with him is this true?? If so what kind of fish should I put in with him?
Oh yeah I just wanted to add something. I went to my local petstore the other day to get a UVB light for my water dragon and priced it at $35. I later went online and priced them at Amazon for $25 s+h included. Today I went to Petland an hour away and picked two of them up for under $30. Isn't that ridiculous how much small petstores try to make off of you?
I also mentioned the whole fish dyeing thing to them and told them to check it out so that they could add their name to the website and discontinue selling them. They just looked at me, laughed, and said they're just fish....needless to say I didn't think it was very funny. |

| Betta tend to do better on their own, some people here i think have successfully mixed the fish while others haven't so i guess its best to wait for their suggestions. |

| Some betta's don't take well to tank-mates, my first suggestion would be to try Cory's, or an otto. However have a back-up plan in case this doesn't work. |

| I agree with the above posters. I've read too many threads here about people trying to keep bettas with other fish only to have someone end up dead or really hurt.
Bettas do best on their own, although in a 10g you could try a couple of otos or corys. Like Red said, be prepared to move them if there's any sign of aggression.
Betta's have such wonderful personalities, they'd rather show off for you than be stressed by tankmates. |

| I have a question that may sound silly.BUT, if you can't keep bettas with almost no other fish,INCLUDING other bettas: how do you breed them? |

| I don't have experience breeding bettas.....as you guessed it's a bit of a process. They are only together for a short time and even then, someone can get pretty beat up or killed.

| My betta used to have ghost shrimp roommates. Then one day, one shrimp swam to the surface (literaly looked like he was walking under the surface) and grabbed one of my betta's pellets. My betta, naturally was quite peeved at this and charged the shrimp who then EXPLODED in a mess of little limbs and chitin. My Richard then discovered how tastey his roommates were compared to his pellets and decided to eat the 4 remaining shrimp within the next day. |

| I tried putting my Betta in with some cories, but it didn't work out, so I had to put him back in a tank by himself. |

| Hi: i have 1-betta that is in with a small, corey-but i don't suggest it as the only reason he is -because he is so very calm for a betta. they have been together since i got the corey and he was the first in the tank-but caution you could lose your
corey very quickly-and i'm at home all day and work at home so i was able to watch them closely. hope this helps you. bella |

I know this is graphic but I'm hoping it will show why Bettas are best kept alone....
Here are a couple examples of what happens to a breeder fish....Betta fish MUST be kept alone in my opinion.....The only exception to that rule is if you have a really large tank and have all females but even then it is dangerous....
This is my gorgeous boy before and after a breeding attempt.....I pulled him out before we even got a breeding because she was destroying him!
The wrapping shot was a failure too but you can see what my Dragon boy did to her lovely fins... |

| Thanks for posting the pics, MM.
I'm finding it very distressful that despite advice given there seems to be a lot of people adding bettas to a community tank or putting them together lately.
The bettas in the stores are pitiful in their cups and although I don't agree with that practice even the stores know what can happen if they added bettas to their tanks.
Edit: This is not directed at anyone in particular so I hope no one gets defensive. Last edited by Lucy; December 18th, 2008 at 10:18 AM.

| I've only had one male with Cory's and that's b/c the Cory's were in the tank well before he was. However b/c he has his water buddies he doesn't pay much attention to me at all. One of the risks you take when giving tank-mates. |

| I guess I am just lucky or got bettas more laid back-I have kept a male and female in a 10g breeding tank with lots of floating plants without problems-I just had a spawn 2 days ago that I did not see until yesterday seen tails hanging today and both male and female in tank, I did remove the female about an hour ago don't want to push my luck.....I know what she will do to her bbies... yummy......and put her in the 55g comm tank |

| There are many people that keep Betta with other fish successfully. I believe the key to this is a larger tank that is fairly heavily planted and introducing the Betta last. That being said, I have the meanest Betta known to man. I have reason to believe he's a product of a betta/great white shark breeding experiment gone very wrong. I will never again try to put him...or any other betta with anything else. They are just to unpredictable for me to have to worry with. Bettas are best admired alone. |
