If you want to cycle faster, pee in the tank? WHAT

Read this in referance to cycling a tank? Anyone know if there is anything to this

Quote:
6 weeks..nitrates and ammonia test at 0. If you want to cycle faster, pee in the tank (yes, I said that) or put a piece of shrimp at the toe end of a pair of pantyhose and hang it in the water for minimum of three days. This will get the bacteria going.

Never..and I mean NEVER cycle an aquarium with fish. It is cruel.

Worked at a saltwater coral and fish farm over 10 years. I know, trust me.

i dont think "pee" is the best method or is a method of cycling faster. using existing filter media is a method. there are other methods on the fishlore site which i can link you too if you are interested.

By peeing in the tank, he is refering to the amounts of amonia in urine that will give it a good kickstart....however urine is definately not the way to go...its loaded with toxins

haha...my worst nightmare is that one night when i'm not home, one of my roommates will come back drunk, and feel like it would be hilarious to relieve himself in my tank. I've heard a few inebriated threats about it...they seem to know that the only way to get me riled up is by threatening my fish lol

The reality of it though there is urea, ammonia, bacterias, sugars from the body... W/ all the byproducts that comes along w/ the ammonia I wouldn't do it.

Lol. Pee In My Tank. YOU GOTTA BE CRAZY!

I Would Try The Shrimp Thing Though Because that doesnt involve urinating into your tank.

no... no wouldn't pee in my tanks! I've got established gravel and media for that sort of thing, not to mention a bottle of safe-start.

Pee in my tank I'm not thinking so. Would it add ammonia to the tank? Yes it would. Does adding ammonia to a tank add ammonia? Well yes it does. Would it speed up the cycle? I don't believe that it would at all. I idea of adding urine is to add ammonia to the tank and I can’t see that being any faster then… well adding ammonia. And as urine isn’t pure ammonia regulating just how much ammonia you would be adding to the tank would be impossible.

And then there’s the whole needing a ladder in order to pee in your tank. Well that just sounds dangerous.
