Thanks LFS

Just my rant for today,
Thanks to the Pet store chain that sold me all the wrong fish. Well I am now finding out after being here for a month that I have a bunch of different fish than I thought I had. I found out I have a platy and not a molly, I have a zebra danio and not a tetra. I now know that a pleco can not live in a 10 gal tank. And they also knew nothing about the nitrgen cycle. And when I went there today I mentioned the tanks being over stocked and they said they were just fine. Needless to say I will not be shopping there anymore. I just have to go alittle further for a good family owned store witha known repitation for over 30 yrs.

NEVER believe what your local fish store employees say. I happen to be lucky enough to be friends will all the employees at my local pet store, I'm not talkin petco or petsmart I mean a little local pet shop. do you go to a local shop or a chain store?

I think Never is a over statement, some are really good and helpful you just need to find the right place. in regards to LFS tanks being overstocked they can get away with it more then Us (Home users) if you notice sometimes you see that all thier tanks are connected in some way which in turn is connected to a super filter (just a really good one). although like you said i havent seen this place and they may infact be overstocking the tank.

heres just a little story of my fish experience, when i went to choose my first fish i choose this guppy although the store owner rejected me and said that one has been bitten choose another. he was a top person. another shop sold me tiger barbs and told me they would be friendly with my other fish wrong wrong wrong. he lost me as a customer now.

the moral of the story is not all LFS employees are bad they are some good guys out there

I'd also say the "Never" is a strong overstatement...however I think I'd rather say "Never trust anything, anyone tells you without first doing your own due diligence and research yourself. I know I've learned that one the hard way...I'll be betting many others have as well.

I will admit I went into this fish tank thing very uneducated. I was just doing a 10 gal tank so my daughter could watch them like they do at day care. So when looking for easy fish to grow that is what I got. So I thought. Yes I know a liitl bit better now.

well, in the beginning trust no one, but as you learn and ask some questions, kind of like a quiz, then see what there answers are. that's how you know they're being truthful, but in the beginning trust no one.

I did and ended up in a big mess of an overstocked and under filtered tank. trust me I've learned from personal experience to mike19 and mrsm3197

Yes NEVER is a harsh word. I have become very good friends with the man at my LFS. Now he always gives me big discounts and also he answers any questions i have straight away. He also set-up my Red Sea Max Tank at my house

I agree with the above posts. After keeping fish for about three months, I've found an LFS with a very knowledgeable owner that actually calls me whenever he gets a pretty gourami in because he knows I love them so much. That's actually where I got my pearl this past week, which I would have missed had he not called me because I didn't need to make a trip to the LFS for anything else.

Where I am at we only have 1 LFS and 2 pet chain stores and Wally-world-I have had poor experiences with all of them...so its up to US to read-up on what we want, get the information for yourself first-most employees at these shops no nothing about fish nor do they care all they want is to sell, make money thats the game-no profit=no store. Thats why we are all at "Fishlore" to learn more about our hobby, we have to do our homework first, but it still stinks when you go to these stores and talk to stupid.......
