Dying guppies...

Can anyone shed any light on why our guppies are dying? Just got 4 from the LFS 2 days ago. One never made it out it out of the bag...the next looked like it was caught beside the filter but kept going for a while....swimming then just floating and kinda going upside down - then swim again etc found it on the bottom this morning and another doing the same thing and died within an hour or so of finding it this morning.

Water temp was maybe a bit low at about 23 C but now 24 C ish. Water qualities I am not sure as dont have a test kit but do regular 2 week water changes - will get checked at the LFS tomorrow. Seems to be a slight film (and this is possibly being pedantic) on top and water is slightly cloudy, but I have just changed the biological? filter, could this be the cause of the cloudyness?

The guppies we have left all have black colourings on them and seem to be doing fine. All the ones we have had without black seem to die... Could it be bad breeding?? Any ideas?

im sorry your fishies are passing but you are probably in a mini cycle because of filter changing..between the cloudyness and the issues you said in your other thread about filters, its probably ammonia issues...getting an API liquid master test kit instead of relying on your fish store would be much better.they will sell you things you probably dont need to fix it....at least if you have the kit, you will know yourself..some prime water conditioner will help with any spikes you might have in the water with daily water changes....goodluck

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Two thoughts... As one the guppies died even before making it to your tank and the other have all died this quickly there’s a good chance the got them sick.

You changed the bio-filter? If this is correct there’s also a good chance that your tank could be cycling. The bio-filters should be rinsed out in tank water and re-used. This where a lot of your bacteria grows. By replacing the filter you lose bacteria and there for ammonia and nitrites can again collect.

I guess this goes hand in hand with my other thread about filters and cleaning. I have put in a good lot of stress coat but the water was slightly cloudy before changing the filter. I doubt it had been changed at all during it's time... The one new guppy left seems to be doing well though so unfortunate loss I guess!

I agree, I think you may have got sick guppies to start out with. Did you go straight home after you got them? What did the fish in the LFS look like? healthy, dead fish in their tanks, dirty tanks, etc....Here in the USA we do at times get poor quality of guppy due to poor breeding habits-weak imnune systems and such...
Pick a day of the week- just for fish tank care and cleaning-25-50% water change weekly is a must for a healthy tank, rinse your filters in the water you removed from the tank is best. Good luck
