Switching Tanks

I was wondering if I switched over overthing, Gravel, Decor, Filter and fish into a new tank would it hurt the cycle?? I was thinking about moving them from a 10 to the 16.

If you are switching everything you will be just fine. The bacteria will travel with the gravel and filter. Just make sure nothing has time to dry out.

That's kinda what I was thinking..I'll just put the gravel in then fill the tank with treated water, same temp of 10 gallon, transfer filter and start it. put all the airstones and decor in then transfer fish. I think I can do all that fairly fast. All should go good. . That's my goal anyway..We'll see if it actually ends up that way.

As I've done this before I will just pre-warn you that moving the gravel tends to stir up a bit of muck and the tank my look cloudy for a few days. But I just did small water changes daily. That along with my filter delt with the problem fairly quickly. Also keep and eye on the filter media as it my clog up fairly quickly.

Good luck and congradulations on the upgrade!

Another thought just came to me. Is your current filter sufficient for the larger tank? If not you will need a second filter and run both, or purchase a second filter that can handle the aquarium on its own and run both long enough for the new filter to develop enough bacteria to take over.

Yup my filter is rated for a 10-20 so I think it should be ok.

It is just my opinion and I’m sure others will have their own opinions too. But I don’t like living on the edge. My current tank is 35 gallons and I decided on a filter for a 50 gallon tank. Just food for thought.

My opinion, although it seems a little late, is always filter at least one and a half times your tank per hour.

Look at the box that your filter came in and it will tell you how many gallons per hour it moves.

My 75gal tank has a empo.400 bio wheel filter box and then I have an under gravel filter set and carbon hooked to a sweeper powerhead to keep the water from being too stagnet on the other side of my tank.

Im sure I'll end up getting a better filter...ohh..actually I have a topfin filter for a 30gallon I could use..lol..I guess doing all these fish rescues and getting free stuff is paying off...I'm not sure how many gallons its filters per hour because I don't have the box..But I'll try to look it up..Thanks guys. I'll post pics once I get everything up and running.

Well, I was going to keep a pleco in a ten gallon tank and when he grows I thought about moving him into a 55 gallon with the same stuff. But I am getting different fish. So I would say it might be okay.
