| Cool water conditioner! You have got to try this! The amazing product I am going to show you today is: Amquel Plus! I have not had any fish(other than a betta) and I use it after I clean it. It says on the label that it removes ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, cholrine, and chloramaine. It is for freshwater and saltwater fish! Cool product, eh? I am not sure if they sell it but we have a bottle. If you can, please try this product. I am sure it will work. Well, over and out! Over andf out! Peace dudes! |

| Well, don't blame me! I did not make it but think of your fish. I would not trust any other product. |

| Removes nitrates
I guess that would be OK if your nitrates were way too high. But my nitrates are 5, I sure wouldn't want to remove them. |

The Amquel Plus, causes your cycle to crash (kills all the beneficial bacteria) and replaces it with non-aquatic bacteria.
It doesn't actually remove anything. It binds them with a chemical, and causes all the bacteria to die off. You have to constantly add this to every water change, and after 3 days, the vhemicals become inert and don't work,so you have ammonia spikes.............which would be good to cycle the aquarium......................then,you add it again, because your water is cloudy, then you kill all the bacteria and it starts over.
Personal Opinion..........garbage......file 13...........no good.......... |

| SOF, Amquel Plus is different than Amquel? I had heard that Amquel would detoxify the ammonia similar to prime. |

| Amquel does detoxify the ammonia, but in a different state (by a different chemical binding process)where it's unusable by the bacteria, causing the bacteria to starve and die off.
Amquel is good for detoxifying large quantities of ammonia in an emergency, where it's not possible to change the water. It's not beneficial to the nitrogen cycle,as Prime is. |

This is good to know. | Amquel is a version of ammo-lok,owned by a sister-company and holding partners of the parent-company |

| Well, since I successfully hi-jacked this thread , what's your take on Stress Coat+.
I like Stress Coat, but I notice the Stress Coat+ leaves a hard film in the measuring cup and wondered if that was healthy. |

| I don't use it either. I know the plus sign is for the ammonia detoxifying chemicals added, but whether this type of chemical is safe for the bacteria or not....I don't know. I tend to stay away from the conditioners that 'remove' ammonia. I tested Prime for a long time before I introduced it to my aquariums,to make sure it wouldn't crash my cycle.
Stress coat is a good water conditioner,is excellent for removing the metals and chlorine/chloramines. Whether or not the + is beneficial or not,I don't know. Sorry |

I use Amquel Plus on a fairly regular basis (it's one of the three water conditioners that I use) and I have never had a tank's cycle crash. I really don't know where you got the "replaces it with non-aquatic bacteria." AmQuel+ doesn't even claim to have any nitrifying bacteria in it. In fact, the only claim regarding this is that it doesn't interfere with the tank's nitrifying bacteria.
However, I don't use it to "get rid of" ammonia, nitrite, or nitrates, I just use it to condition the water. Last edited by sirdarksol; December 4th, 2008 at 09:38 AM.

| It might be the product version,I am not sure;but this bottle of Amquel plus lists nitrifying bacteria, in the bottom left corner by the bar code,it doesn't actually say "nitrifying bacteria" it says 'nitrifiers',whether they are referring to bacteria or not I don't know,I could be mistaken on that. |

| Two different types of AmQuel+, then. There's nothing about nitrifiers on my bottle.
I agree with you, if something says it has "nitrifiers," it will compete with the nitrifying bacteria. It might just be enzymes, or it might be terrestrial bacteria, but either way, it would be eating the nitrifying colony's food. |
