Overfeeding or too little

Sorry about posting again but have had this question for a while. All of the stuff I read on feeding says "as much as they will eat in 3 minutes" or some derivation of that. I generally crush up my fish flakes so they are smaller, and sprinkle in a pinch tank top. All the fish get some, but it's gone in like 10 seconds MAX. The amount I put in looks right to me, but should i be adding more since they eat it so fast?

In my opinion it depends on what type of fish you have. Our Danios are little pigs that gobble food down in seconds. While our platys are a bit more lethargic about it. And it can take our algae eaters hours to eat their wafers.

This is actually a very good question, probably with several good answers as well. lol

Since a fish's stomach is about as big as their eye, they don't really need that much.
Some fish will continue to eat until they are ill.

As long as everyone seems to be getting their fair share and it looks like the right amount to you, I think you're fine.

I got home last night to find that my boy friend fed the fish so much that they looked like little balloons!!! My betta females were lying on the floor too lazy to even swim!! I was so angry at him!!
But this morning they looked much better *phew* but I only gave them a little daphnia - they are on diet for today - I'll see what they look like when I get home after work.

thanks for the replies! Initially I asked the question b/c I was afraid that overfeeding had caused my nitrates to go up, but in further investigation I'm also seeing that "tetra cycle" can cause that too; I added a capful of that just out of curiosity. ( i got some free with a tank purchase). I'm throwing that stuff out just to be sure...

I normally use the lid to the food canister and take 2 pinches of food and crush it up to feed my guys. It seems as if everyone is getting plenty including my catfish and African Butterfly, who is very slow to eat considering he just waits on it to float by his face.
