Red tail Shark-help

I really badly want to know if I can get a RTBS for my 29g tank, that currently has 6 card. tetras, 1 zebra danio, 1 black phantom tetra, and 1 honey gourami. It would be a real big help if you experienced guys could help me because im really debating about getting one and am not sure how fast it will and grow and if it will bully/kill the other fish. Please let me know-Thanks!

Red tail sharks can be kept in community tanks. However they will be very aggressive if crowded. They will also tend to be aggressive towards smaller fish and new comers to a tank. To keep a red tail in a community tank they really need a minimum of a 55 gallon tank.

Red tails also require a lot of hiding spots and prefer low lighting, so if you have live plants they also would not be a good mix.

So I too must agree with the others. To keep a red tail in a 29 gallon community tank likely would not be a good mix.

I would say with a nice cave or bottom decoration to call his own, that yes you could have one...I have one in my 30 gal with some angels and a dwarf gourami...he stays in his cave and no one seems to have the nerve to go near him LOL ....you are only at 18" of adult fish so another 6" would be fine bio load wise...

I agree with Shawnie.

We had a 29g (It busted, but we still have the fish in a big bin with the filters and light running) with a full grown Angelfish, 4 Zebra danios, some Ghost Shrimp, 2 Dwarf Gouramis, and a RTBS. We didn't have any problems with the shark because we had a big rock formation that he called his own. They really are awesome fish to have. I would say it depends on the fish, the environment, the tank mates, and the size of the tank. I think you could house a happy one in your tank without any problems. That's assuming you have a portion of the tank he could claim.

the real question is what are the dimensions your tank (since I'm trusting Shawnie that you've got room). 30-36" long and I'd say go for it!

Also a note about the plants, RTS do like lower lighting but that doesn't mean that you can't have a planted tank. You could do highlight with having gradual lighting changes, (Expample with 2 bulbs, only turn one on for a 1/3 of the day, 2 for 1/3 and then back to one till the evening.) You may find that the shark will be cavey during the brighter part of the light cycle but if you're tank is long enough he should be out patroling his "territory" pretty much all day.
(or just do lowlight, less complicated.)

Please don't keep starting new threads to ask the same question. IF you aren't sure what happened to a previous post, just go to the top and click on "My Posts" and you'll see if you got replies.

You got answers on your previous thread.

I have an RTS in my 30, and have 30inches of lenght at the bottom. However, I knew that something could go wrong as it grew, and since I am getting the 55 gallons, I will be ready to move the shark if he seems uncomfortable or becomes agressive as it grows.
