A few questions

I've recently bought a 60L (12G) tank and am in the process of cycling it using the add and wait method. I was wondering...
  • Is a pitbull Pleco alright to have in my tank?
  • Can bettas live in a community tank (Saw some in with guppies in my LFS)
  • How long should it take for the ammonia to drop from 5ppm to 0ppm after i add it for the 1st time (its been 6 days)?
Thanks for all the help

Wow, your LFS had bettas in with guppies? Bettas will attack fish with long, colorful fins, so I would never keep one with guppies. As a general rule, bettas are better off alone, but there are some fish they will get along with. If the other fish aren't colorful, nippy, or agressive, you might be able to keep them together, but it all depends on the betta.

Congrats on doing a fish less cycle. It'll be so much easier on you and your soon to be fish.

Betta's aren't normally community fish. They do best on their own. Sometimes they will tolerate cories, ottos and snails although that doesn't always work either.
They will reward you with the most wonderful personalities if allowed to.

LFS can get away with mixing fish that shouldn't be mixed because they aren't there Permanently. In a permanent situation a Betta will be much happier and as a result more responsive(safer too) to you alone or with Corys or Otos.

And even then, the fish can get pretty banged up. Sun Ce, the last betta I had, was living in a tank with mollies, and his fins had been chewed to nubs compared to how big they grew once he was alone in his tank.

Your exactly right SDS. So many people see how fish are mixed at the store and assume thats a good permanent mix and that just isn't so.
