Spike in Ammonia

I have tested my water parameters and everything was fine as ammonia, nitrates and nitrates were all at zero or the very faintest trace. Now for the last 3/4 days, my nitrites and nitrates are still low but I am getting a reading of Ammonia. It's not high but that is besides the point. And it does not seem to be getting converted to nitrites which it should be doing. Please help. How do I get the Ammonia to go down?
p.s. I have already done 25% water change but still no change.
Only change in circumstances is adding a plec (gibbiceps) to the tank, could it be him?

Yes, the addition of the pleco is probably the cause.
The pleco you have can get up to 17" and creates a lot of waste.

Unfortunately, your tank is too small for him, not only for his size, but his bio-load.

They're very cute, though.

I had a gibbiceps myself in my 55g tank and had to get rid of it due to its size. They need a much bigger tank due to the full size and bioload. I would go with a syn catfish from lake malawi.

I agree with lucy. The Pelco is most likely the cause.
