How do I return fish to a LFS?

Situation:
1) When our 3 platy babies and 1 swordtail baby grow up we will be 2.5 inches overstocked. My husband loves his platy gang but the male and larger female are very aggressive. I am thinking that when their 3 babies grow larger and begin swimming with them the aggression should cease. Am I right? If not, should I get rid of the male and the mean female or just the male?

2) I am also thinking about turning in my black mollie, velvet swordtail, and the baby swordtail. That would allow me to get another Zebra Danio to make a total of 6 danios. That would be most fair to the mollie and swordtails as my pH hangs out too low for their liking.

The point:
Do you call the LFS and ask if they can take fish? Do you pack your fish up and show up at the LFS? Most importantly, what on earth do you say? Would Superpets or Petsmart go along with this or would a Mom and Pop FS be more likely to go along with a deal?

Thanks in advance.

Emory

P.S. - I am loving this forum!

You'll have to call the petstore and ask before going. Many petstores will not take livebearers, as they are overloaded with them usually. If they do agree to take them, they won't be likely to give anything for them.

As long as you have both sexes you'll continue to have fry. What to do with them all is always a problem with livebearers.

just take the fish to the store and sneak them into the store tanks
or put them in shipping bags, sneak them into the store and walk out blatantly holding them and the store will think you're stealing them and take them back
BTW:JK
I would recommend calling first or finding someone who wants to start a fish tank

My local Mom and Pop FS, is the LAST place I would EVER take a fish to. Their conditions are deplorable, half their fish have ICH, and I don't think they EVER clean their gravel. They have a great selection of accessories, but I wouldn't touch their fish.

I hope yours is better.

As far as petsmart goes, I don't think they'll take fish....not sure. I do know that they're not allowed to mix a customer's water with their own. I have a buddy who works there, who (if I really asked) would probably sneak my fish in, but he would most likely get in trouble if caught. He told me that the LFS that I mentioned above gets ALL their fish from people who don't want them. which is why they don't care about them; they have 100% profit margin.

LFSs don't mix the water together they just net them.
If you get friendly with a lfs manager they will take your fish...but the average stores usually just want rare fish not common ones.
