Not a natural disaster but...

One of my big Apple Snails died yesterday due to getting trapped in the intake of one AquaClear 70 at the Rainbowfish tank (it's an extra filter). I removed the intake tube with the dead snail attached and placed a sponge in the open cylinder. Somehow the sponge got loose (I am sure it fitted tight, maybe during a 1/2 hour power outage last night it went out) and I just noticed it now.

I found the following casualties inside the HOB:
7 dead fish:
two 2" adults Long Finned Zebra Danio females (both were carrying eggs).
two 1.5" juveniles Melonotaenia Lacustris (Turquoise Rainbowfish)
one 2" adult Glofish (Long Finned) male
one 2.5" adult Fancy Guppy female (pregnant).
one 1" juvenile neon tetra

2 injured fish, one of them severely:
one 2" adult Fancy guppy male (his tail is totally shredded, significant loss of body scales in the dorsal region). I don't think he will make it.
one 1" juvenile Neon Tetra. (broken fins but might make it).

2 without a scratch:
one 1" juvenile Neon Tetra
one Long Finned Red Zebra Danio (not a glofilsh, not dyed either).

I just made readings in that tank (made a huge water change yesterday due to medication for ick out brake). Since all parameters are stable, ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, nitrate <10ppm, I'll keep an eye on them for a couple of days.

I'm going to do a sad update in my Aquarium info now.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of so many of your fish. Hang in there and best of luck with your injured fish. At least they had the best of care before.

My daughter was with me when I found out what happened. We did the "good-bye" ritual, in which we take a last look at the dead fish, flush the toilet and drop them in as we thank them for being around, sharing their lives with us.

She asked me a couple of times today "and how you feel?" (trying to translate literally, this is how it would sound in English, without the to do verb, she's 4 years old you know).

Whenever I tell her that I feel sad -she asks me several times-, she hugs me and once she gave me a "tank-tour" naming our fishes for me... "Look! Neons! aren't they beautiful?".

I promised her I would pick her earlier from school (pre-school) tomorrow noon and the two of us will go to together to the LFS.

I post here two pics, the second one is out of focus but you can tell how his beautiful tail looked like (red, green, black spots, yellow), in the first one the way he looks now. He made it through the night and stays impressively active despite the damage he endured.

:::Hugs::: to your little girl. I believe you mentioned before her name is Camilla. She is doing such a wonderful job helping Daddy when he feels sad. That makes everything so much better.

pepetj, so sorry you lost so many.
Your daughter sounds so caring and thoughtful for a little girl. Enjoy looking for new tank mates. Maybe some more beautiful Neons your daughter loves so much.

Update: the male fancy guppy died today. The injured Neon is recovering full speed.

I took my daughter, yes her name is Camila, to the LFS and we got home 2 Melanotaenia Lacustris (Lake Kutubu/Turquoise Rainbowfish) and 6 Ghost Shrimps.

There were no Neons available so we agreed to have another LFS quick detour at noon one of this days. She really enjoys going with me to the LFS and I love that!

Sorry for another lost guppy. I'm glad the neon recovered.

Yes, Camila is a special girl, you're mentioned her quite a bit and her compassion has amazed me. You can tell she's the apple of your eye. (Did I just show my age? )

apple of (one's) eye
