The drip-method is the best way to
acclimate your fish from reef set ups to basic freshwater aquariums. It works well for any type of fish, fresh water or salt water.
You need a bucket, container of some sort to hold about 3 gallons of water.
air line tubing, enough to go from aquarium to bucket
clamp, paper clip, clothes pin, something for adjusting flow on tubing
You place one end of tubing in the aquarium, and 1 end in the bucket
place fish in the bucket, same water as they cam from store in.
create a siphon in tubing, and allow it to flow into bucket. Use the paper clip, clothes pin or clamp to restrict flow to a steady, but slow drip into the bucket from the aquarium. Allow it to drip slowly for about an hour to 3 hours,or to 3 times the water level you started with. Time depends on the type of fish, hardy or sensitive. Hardier fish, can be acclimated quicker, and more sensitive fish should be acclimated at a slower rate.
I personally acclimate ALL my fish at least 3 hours hardy or not. It reduces stress, and slowly gets them use to the new water they will be in.
After acclimation is complete, net the fish and transfer them to the aquarium as fast as possible. DO NOT add the water from the bucket to the aquarium, this water is to be discarded, since it contains the water from the "alien" aquarium, from the fish store. You don't want to contaminate the water in your aquarium.
I would suggest the fish from the store be quarantined for 3 weeks before being introduced into the main aquarium. You would acclimate the fish twice, using the same method. Once, acclimating them to the quarantine, after 3 weeks;acclimating them to the main aquarium.
I hope that is helpful for you.
