Does Fin rot med increase alkalinity of water?

Hi all,

I'm new to this site and a newbie fish owner, I have a 35gallon tropical fish tank set up and have had a few hiccups already! I am 90% certain my tank is cycled and my fish otherwise seem happy and contented. My latest problem is - my local aquarium sold me neon tetras with fin rot! I needed to act quickly as I didn't want my other fish, black widows-dwarf gourami's, clown loaches, and harlequin rasboras getting it.

So they gave me for free a fin rot med (can't remember the name-but smells strongly of aloevera) and since dosing them daily of this med the water aquilinty rose to 7.4, my question is, is this the med and will it settle? I did water change and put the med and it was still 7.4 hadn't budged, help?...I am also medicating my loaches for ick (yes I've had a bad run so far!)

P.S I haven't bought the wizbang test kits as they are about $60au dollars but I may do this in the next few weeks, I just have a p.h test kit at the moment.

Cheers!

I wouldn't worry about that 7.4, that is fine for your fish. But your clown loach will be outgrowning your tank. They get pretty large.

The medication for fin rot is an antibiotic, and doesn't change the pH levels in the aquarium. The bacteria that causes ick is the same bacteria that causes fin rot,so the same meds can be used for both, but raising the temp to 28-29c,changing 50% of the water daily, increasing aeration, and removing all carbon filtration (carbon removes meds) for about 2 weeks will be beneficial to putting your fish back to good health. I wish you luck.

Hi guys,

Thanks for you replies, about the Loaches - yeah I did a search of the (little guys) after the sales guy sold em to me (knowing I had a 35gal tank) and I went back to the store the next day and went ballistic at him for selling me 3 fish that could easily get to 30cm long!!! What the!? Well he laughed and said if I was lucky enough to have them last that long he would buy them back off me for the sale equivalent price for their size at that time - firstly how rude to think they wont last that long! Secondly it makes it very hard cause I'm attached to them already-fantastic personalities!

So I do have a solution for that when the time comes (p.s love the name sid fishious-very unique!)

To soldieroffortune - tah''hanks for your help-I feel more confident now I'll just have to keep soldering on as its only been going on about a week now - so hopefully by end of next week with all those suggestions above I will be free to enjoy my fish!
